Having not visited regularly I noticed that there is a reputation points icon...

... Can one of the mods or someone else suitably qualified enlighten me as what this means?

I means click on the little speaker dude by my name and give me some points :p

In the grand scheme it doesn't mean anything. For our forum, it could be used as a way to tell what other people think (in general) of the different members here.

It's used to randomly insult your opinion without knowing who's insulting you.

It's pretty funny when someone gives you negative reputation but spells insults wrong

these points are fucking stupid. I get home from work and have 26 points. Then 2 hours later, I get 1 more negative and 2 positive and am down to 20 points... Figure that one out.

Simple, the negative was from somebody with a lot of posts and time up. The positives from relative newbies.
Is it general knowledge how the points work?
