Hi, I read the article about the problems on the 87 golf on the previous article. Problem is that I know nothing about car engine and I want to learn to know it becoz i think some machanics are not doing the job properly or if they do they leave very far.
For instance I have a problem with my caberator, my golf was starting fine but was not holding it's idle. When i was at a stop i had to start in again which was very anoyying, i took it to a mechanic and he suggested that i buy an idle jet kit becoz what was faulty was the idle jet. I did that and he started to repair it, in this time it looked as if he is struggling to repair it. At the end he said it's fine it's working properly but the sound of it was not promising the revs sounded a little bit high, i drove the car after two days the revs were starting to go high and low i phoned him and he said i must take it to nearby workshop to have the caberator to be set via c02 machine otherwise the caberator now is fine.
I considered that and as i was going to workshop the car did not start at all and now I'm pissed coz i'm gonna have to organise the car to be towed from my house.
Is there any way I can do this by myself without hurting my caberator, the caberator has new idle jet kit and suspect that there's fuel licking some where there that is preventing it to start.
I know I have no clue about car engine but I'm a quick learner i can do anything and my mind very versatile i can repair almost anything if given right info and tools.
If there's anyone with literature on repairing golf engine's please e-mail me with this info. I dont want to be a mechanic but for my golf I'll do anything just to have it working again without relying on paying mechanics again and again, I dont mean to offend no one!!

Thanks Dannis

There are various things which can go wrong with the Pierburg carbs, not just the jets. There are various vacuum hoses, valves and solenoids which can be faulty and very difficult to trace unless you replace each part bit by bit. My advice is to get a replacement carb from a scrappy (fairly cheap but possible limited life) or buy a weber conversion (expensive but reliable). Replacing the carb is fairly easy if you're methodical and make notes of the bits you pull off so you know where they go back. Weber conversions should come with instructions.
