deck plate variation

chaps: in fact, i did not use a deck plate at all. following some tips from others (search the net for gadgetonline, he has a link to another guy on one of his pages) i just removed the elbow inside of the fender wall. first you need to take your air filter box out, and the short pipe that goes to the engine compartment wall. then go under your wheel well, pull the plastic skirt, find the pipe that continues from the previously mentioned one, unbolt it and remove. slap all the rest of it back, install a high flow stock-style replacement filter (K&N, etc.).

the 90 degree part that you remove is very constrictive, esp in my 2.7L taco. i went one step further, and sawed the 90 degree part out with a hacksaw, and buttoned the small part remaining back onto the engine compartment/wheel well- just for a snug fit for the first-mentioned short filter box pipe. confused at this point? it is all clear when you look at it.

this mod, in combo with the electric fan (earlier post), made for slightly better throttle response, and slightly more percieved power or economy, depending on your foot.

enjoy- bk

I have already replaced my filter with a K&N. What I'm wondering is if I do a "deck plate mod" or decide to remove this "constrictive elbow" will I have a problem with the truck running lean? I also have a 2.7 ... I see that you have to reset the ECM, does that always do the trick with the Fuel Delivery?

No, your truck will not run lean. I don't believe that removing the ECM fuse does anything for this mild of a modification. You get more of a variation in oxygen content between summer and winter than you do before and after either of these mods.

One advantage the deckplate mod has over the elbow is by replacing the deckplate cover, you have standard protection against getting water in the filterbox. If you remove the elbow, you may get water in your filterbox if you drive through standing water. It's not something you can easily reverse, whereas replacing the deckplate cover is trivial.

Yeah, I have the elbow mod and deckplate done to my 2.7, much better response and WOT is easy to notice the subtle differences.

So you guys are recommending both mods ? Has anyone done the Borla Cat Back Exhaust for the 2.7 ? I'm wondering how the sound is ?

most people I know with the 2.7 are running either a flowmaster or magnaflow system.

they're all custom setups. the flowmaster or magnaflow muffler you should be able to get for like $60 and then go to an exhaust shop and have them custom bend pipe for you. It'll end up being much cheaper than an entire bolt on system, plus it's custom!
