alright guys.......i really need some help figuring this out.
i just had my engine rebuilt a few months ago and have had no problems until now. i took the car to have the water pump replaced, the timing belt, the tensioner and the pulley.
but when i got the car back i noticed that the engine would start to stutter at idle. it seemed really weird. the check engine light came on and thought it was either a bad sensor or they made a mistake with the timing belt. the car runs fine except when it is at idle. the car jerks violently asif it was going to shut off but it doesnt. if anyone could help me diagnosing this problem it would be greatly appreciated
thanks.
i also think the motor mounts are worn out and could contribute to some of the shaking, but i need to know what is causing the bad idle problem to begin with.

Hopefully it is just your ecu resetting itself if they disconnected the battery. If this is so this problem should correct itself within a few days. Pending on how much you drive. If not I would take the car back and raise some hell!

but.....ive dirven the car for a longer time now and nothing yet. i took it once to get a computer diagnostic and they told me it was the speed sensor. i thought that it wouldnt cause that big of a problem....or could it? does the speed sensor make these kind of problems?

Same problem here, my personal Mechanic does work on the side, he works at GM Garage but used to do a foreign cars before that, I just had him replace the timing belt the other day, he told me to bring it back to him, he thinks the two cam gears are not aligned and that he must have one of them is one tooth off, the car runs great other than the ruff Idle, it had a perfect Idle before he replaced the timing belt. I will be taking it back to him to check out in a couple of days.

this is exactly what i thought it was. but dont want to take it to the same guy again because i dont trust him anymore.
if i take it elsewhere do you think it will cost me a lot or not so much to get it corrected?

I think it will take about the same amount of labor time again to correct the problem, because you have to go through the same procedures to get to the timing belt tensioner to loosen the belt and re-align the camshaft pulleys. my car seems to have more power this way and the mechanic said it would if one tooth off. I have heard that the mechanics should put the balance pulley also know as the harmonic balancer back on the engine and rotate it by hand 2 to 6 times to make sure every timing mark is correct with the number one piston at TDC. before they put everything back together, I think they get in a hurry sometimes.

I forgot to mention that my check engine light is not on, so maybe you do have a different problem?

take it back to the garage you had the work done at and get them to fix it for free if the mechanics an ass ask to talk to his supervisor, hopefully it was one of the nobodies that did the work and the manager will take care of it. then go find a new garage

I had the similiar type of problem. Which I just corrected. Here are a few things to check.....

First that timing belt can be a fkn bitch.
Once all timing marks were lined up and I adjusted the t-Belt tensioner it kept moving out of timing. Best way to correct that is to hold the cam gears in place with a 17mm socket I believe it was and then put the belt on them. and then line up the bottom pulley, I actually put it a slight bit to the left of the timing mark to compensate for the amount it will move once I put the t-belt tensioner in place. It will probobly take a few tries but I did it for me and my timing is now perfect!

One other thing to do is check your sensors. If you are standing by the driverside front fender leaning into the engine bay the throttle body will be in front of you, well if you take out your stock air intake tubing you will be able to see your wiring right underneath the set of wires that go to your injectors is a sensor. The very first one that you come to. I dont know what that one is but that was what was making my car act up. I found out that after I swapped the engines the harness didnt match up perfect. So I had to pull out the little rubber cover and then It would allow me to plug it all the way in. Check that sensor.

I had the exact same problem and now it is fixed.
SORRY FOR THIS LONG AS POST.
But I know how frustrating it was when I couldnt diagnose the problem. Hopefully it will help you out.
Let me know how it goes.

i will probably get that checked and get that sensor checked also.. i dont know what the crap is going on with my car but it will get fixed. also the motor mounts are not working properly and thought that this contributed to the car shaking so much.

they also told me that it could be the 02 sensor that does this..my car is getting awful gas mileage..
could that be a contribution to the engine acting up..the check engine light is on and has been for a while

Yea the O2 sensor could contribute to poor gas mileage.
Once you get your car "fixed" do the routine maintenance.
I have a bad tranny mount I have to replace makes the car shake a bit right before I come to a stop. I'm probobly going to fix it today. Or tomorrow.

ok..........
i found out what the problem is on my car.. and it does tie into the timing issue i once thought it was...
i took it to the dealer and they told me that the head gasket was leaking oil. and was causing the rough idle.
i dont know what to do.. is it possible that the head gasket is just loose and only needs to be tighttened or does it need a whole new head gasket change. i had rebuilt a while ago and think that this is absurd.
there was no cause for this........
please guys tell me what i should do..
thanks

noooooooooooo.
the dealer is probably the worst place to get info from...i found this awesome mechanic in nogales sonora......he checked out my car and told me that it was definetley not an oil leak........the timing was off two tooth marks and told me it would be difficult to fix, but it would get fixed.......this was a while ago........

he fixed it and charged me 160 bucks.thaat was awesome.the dealer told me they would fix the "problem they thought it was" and woul charge me 1600 dollars........what do you think?

thats awsome dude.. yeah somtimes you gotta make sure there looking for the solution and not looking for the worst case (most labor) scenerio..

sounds like either your timing is off or your tps (throttle position sensor) is bad/not reading correctly. check those 2 things before you start searching for other probs.

i can tell you from my own experience that not to many mechanics know how to do a timing belt change on ours cars :disappoin, with the Talon I had, i send it to one mechanic to do that job, he charge me 220 and did it wrong at the first time, so I took it back to him, and he said that his job was just perfect, he said "I'm a professional I worked in this 25 years" I can say now BS (he was from Argentina as I am, thats why I trust to him at the very first time), so I tooked to another mechanic he charge me another 220 and told me that the timing was 2 tooth out he fix it and the car start runnig like an F1 :iceslolan unfortunately one of the hoses of the intercooler pipes was loose so I start having a huge boost leak, I took it back to the mechanic he check it and fix it for free, but I notice that I was having to worst gas millage in the world (:banghead: another problem), so I tooked to another mechanic he charge me another 220 fix the time AGAIN now 5 tooth out, and he found that it were a lot of bolts missing, he fix that too. And after that the car was running so good that it was impressive the diference :naughty:.
So as you can see it's not easy to find a good mechanic that fix your car in the right way, next time i will do it my self, it's gonna be cheaper and if I do it wrong it's gonna be my fault.
my counsel is go back to the mechanic who did the rebuilt and tell him to fix the problem the engine should be under their guarantee.
