96 Eclipse does not have a Tach? add one?

I have a 1996 Eclipse 2.0 L non turbo, manual transmission but it has no tachometer in the instrument cluster, I can find a used instrument cluster and replace it with one that has a tach, but I don't know if the wiring and connectors for the tach will be there once I pull out the old instrument panel, also does anyone know if the speedometers are the same for Manual and Automatic Transmissions? or anything about the wiring and connectors?
Thanks for your help

Yes, I bought it used, but it appears that it came from the factory that way.

I called the local Mitsubishi Dealership and was told that the base model Eclipse didn't have a tachometer, my 1996 is not an RS or GS its just a plain hatchback, it looks real nice the guy I bought it from said he put a rear spoiler on it painted blue flames on the hood and added chrome 17" enkie rims, also this car came from the factory with 14" tires & rims, it shows that size right on the drivers door sticker, he gave me the old 14" tires & rims, they are ugly with hub caps.

Wow I've heard of this "hatchback" before, but never seen any pics or have any info on it really.
Let us know what it did come with spec wise, etc. and lastly bring on the pics!

I don't have the title back yet, just bought it a couple of weeks ago, I went to carfax and entered the Vin# and came up with the following information:
1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse, Hatcback 2 DR, 2.0 L L4 SFI DOHC 16V
Gasoline, Front wheel Drive, Manufactured in the USA.
Standard Equipment: power steering, air conditioning optional ( it does have AC ) AM FM, power brakes, tilt wheel.
So your saying it must at least be an RS ?
Thanks

I will be taking some pictures this Saturday with a digital camera, will send one of the instrument cluster, and the car, I know the guy I bought it from said it didn't even have a wing on the trunk he added one, not like the original eclipse has but a different type, looks cool though. I've never posted pictures on here, can you show several at one posting?
believe it or not.

Hey, I know this is an old forum, but I am in the same boat as mister d, I bought a 1996 eclipse hatchback. It comes with a spot for the tach, but on tach. It is just blacked out. (I will get a pic tomorrow).
Well to my question. Is there a page or some one that can tell me where to hook up the tach wires? I bout a separate tach and don't want to pay some one >$50 to just hook up 2 wires.
Thanks
If there is a different thread to find this info, please tell me. I can not find it.

Wow. I never thought they would do something like that. Well, considering they didnt machine some of their crankshafts right, I guess anythings possible, lmao, but I didnt think theyd leave the tach area blacked out. Thats really tacky. No pun intented.

My neighbor has a 1991 Honda Civic with no tach, and its a manual. He just guesses when to shift, but it's not really hard to do after you practice awhile. I don't know if you meant any car or just DSM's, but thought I'd share this.

its not hard to drive without one, but its imposible to race.

And back to my question, is there a page that can tell me how to install a new tachometer?

Racing is tougher, yes.. but not impossible.
Wow.. seems kinda pointless to have space for the tach and not fill it.

That ish is crazy. All cars should have a tach, especially manuals. What cheap sob would buy a manual without the optional tach? That's not just poor, that's dumb.
DSMs were made in Illinois, but were they made for foreign markets? I wonder if your car is Canadian or Mexican, accounting for the different model options. Would that fact show up on a carfax, as through gray market, or something? Just curious.
You can swap entire gauge clusters, if you want. I'd worry about a different odometer reading, not sure that it can easily be turned back or forward, for obvious reasons. I bet you could take your old odometer set up and attach it to the new cluster, though. The ECU has a tach wire that you could tap into.
I searched, here are links that might help:
(DSMTuners, some guy) the wire you want is "on the bigger clip, fourth wire, green." Referring to a 1g.
These are the pins for a 2g turbo, http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ecu-harness-2G.html.
How to install an aftermarket gauge, for reference: http://www.egauges.com/AM_Instr.asp#Tachometers
(DSMTuners, again) it's as simple as tapping into the right wire, and the harness still exists under the dash, or you can tap off the ECU.
So get a new cluster and have fun. I also found more info about your car, which was an economy package.
"steel hubcaps, no radio, no tach, and not even a rear defroster" -fauchpj
and
"There were REALLY ECONOBOX packages of the 2G RS Eclipse that were absolute base models. We're talking not even those SCHWeeT 14" mags, but HUBCAPS. No tach, no floor mats, no center console insert, just totally basic." -caitsith

i'd just buy a stock cluster with a tach. they're easy to replace and it'd be way lesser of a hassle than trying to install an aftermarket one.

LMFAO not even a fuckin radio? Who would buy such a car....let alone manufacture one. Even the '91 civic base model I drove had a god damn radio. Thought that was pretty standard after like 1980.....

I just bought the car 3 weeks ago. One of the reasons I got it was because it was cheap and had nothing done to it. This is going to be a two year project to bring it to a show and race car. The funny part about it is that it has all the hook-ups for everything. (ie: the rear defrost, and at least 5 other wires that are not hooked up) I just need to gut the car and take out all the unused wires.

Damn thats crazy lol. When I had my RS, I thought it was the base base model bein an RS and automatic. This proves me wrong. Learned something new today hehe. I would like to see some nice pictures.
As for not having the tach, you could always just get a new autometer tach and put it in the gauge bezel.
