It's coming up to a year for my girlfriend and I. I'm 17 and she's 16. Decided to get her a ring (show's commitment, etc ..) and I'm gonna make her a scrapbook of our time together so far (she likes that kind of stuff) but I was wondering if I could be more original?

If you read what I first wrote nevermind. I was thinking too far into this. Yea that sounds like a good idea. All I have to say is Picnic at a romantic spot.

oh so young.. The scrapbook is a good idea. Try taking her somwhere that shes been wanting to go or do somthing that you normally wouldnt be interested in doing. Dinner somewhere SHE likes or a hobby or activity etc.

at 16 and 17... don't get her a ring. get her a necklace or a bracelet or something of that sort. however the scrapbook is a great idea (esp because in marriage terms paper is the traditional 1 year gift *shrugs*). flowers always work fine though

diamond earings. I got mine from my boyfriend at the time when I was 16, and still wear them. dont get her a ring unless its something shes picked out or you know she'll absolutly like. most rings are ugly and you'd probably be wasting your time and money if you buy her something she doesnt like.

you let me know in a couple of months of that silver band turns pink :greddy2:
j/k. Some guys just start off with the fake jewlery first just to see if their worth the time and money...yes it's pretty bad but my other friend got screwed buying this girl an expensive ring and she dumped his ass the next day, she moved, he lost money, we all had a great laugh

Great idea. I'm gonna take her to play basketball at the park, she's always asked me for us to play (she's on the team) but we never have. Then we can have a picnic! Can't wonder too far from home cause of her parents but sounds like it'll be a good day. I've given her a necklace already, and a matching bracelet. I think I can find a beautiful ring. Thanks for the help.

Edit: And I'm gonna look into the diamon earings. Damn, I need a job.

i was gonna suggest something classy... say, go down the local, a few pints, then maybe a kebab and a minicab back to hers... j/k :grinno:

Dinner at a nice place never fails , flowers are a must (one single rose). good luck :)

You are going to have to elaborate for us Americans. Down the the local what? a few pints of what? whats a kebab or a minicab?

One translation comin' up :)

Local = local pub, typically decorated as though it were still the 1970's, catering for old men mostly, and occasionally the odd war veteran dying (not literally) to tell you a war story

Pint = pint of lager, fairly self explanatory

Kebab = chicken/lamb kebab - greek/turkish food typically enjoyed by British men after a night out on the piss (getting drunk). Only eaten in these circumstances due to the fact they are the only places still open when the pubs close and you wouldnt want to have a kebab when sober (dingy restaurants, if you can even call them that).

Minicab = illegal taxi driven by illegal immigrant, wouldnt want to take one home alone if you're a girl

This combination of activities shapes the typical night out for a UK university student, except replace the local with a university union, where much cheap alcohol is sold. Despite what it sounds like, uni nights out were great fun, just not something you'd want to do with a gf for an anniversary :D

So i was sarcastically suggesting that my good british pal Swoxy treat his lady out to a classy night on the tiles ;)

Capice?

well I figured thats what all that ment, but the guy is only 17, so basicly it's illegal for him to do any of that.

Jay, that was beautiful man. You successfully explained that epitome of British culture to the Americans. :1: Dayna, I'm not sure on US laws but here you need to be 18 to drink, and my goatee usually takes care of that for me.

Thank you, thank you :D
There's nothing quite like getting shitfaced 'UK stylee'. Unfortunately it wont be happening for me for quite some time, studying every night (including saturdays) until my exam next month :(

and Dayna, illegal or not, people here drink from a very early age. Ive been going to pubs since i was 15

you have to be 21 here to drink, some states you can get into bars at 18, some 19 and some 21. But unless you're 21, you cant drink.

That sucks. Do you guys get around it or is it tough?

I guess you could make fake IDs but I have no idea if they work. I've never really tried. It may be easy to get into a bar if you look older but pretty much all bartenders card you if you try to get something to drink.

I went to the grocery store a few days ago to get a bottle of wine with my boyfriend, I paid for it but the lady carded both of us because I guess she thought I was buying it for him (most people say he looks about 30).

I havent been ID'd in years. People think i look older so even when i was under-age i hardly ever used my fake ID. My gf on the other hand was ID'd the other day when buying a pack of cigarettes! You only have to be 16 to smoke and she's 21. the guy must have been blind....

anyway.. i guess most people in the states dont go clubbing until they're 18 or 21? If so, that's really bad.
