Metal lovers, get your asses in here!

This thread is all about discussing metal.

A small, incomplete, in no particular order or genre list of my favorites;

Metallica(their first five albums at least)
Megadeth
Iron Maiden
Motorhead
Guns N' Roses
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin
Pantera
Ozzy Ozbourne
Hatebreed
Disturbed
Rob Zombie
Type 'O Negative
Godsmack

...many others but I listed what most of you are familiar with. I like alot of underground stuff but in my area it's hard to come by. We do have this local band Kritikill who are awesome. Kinda a mix of thrash & death.

...and yes I'm aware some of what I posted is nu-metal but I like alot of that as well. So sue me. :sunglasse

Zeppelin was some of the first heavy metal. Zeppelin for life! http://www.vfxtalk.com/forum/images/smilies/buttrock.gif

Not much of a modern metal fan myself, I can't stand death metal at all. Still, I like a bit of thrashing every now and then.

Finally, someone mentioned Tool!!
Although, it's really hard to say to your friends "Man, I really like Tool".
I'd have to say that they are by far my favourite followed closely by Godsmack.
Being a former drummer myself (read I sold my drums to buy another motorcycle Sigh) it's usually the first thing I pick up on. Although I do appreciate every other instrument ( no Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute though  )
I'm not a fan of Death Metal either, but if they would actually get singers who could sing instead of " BARK BARK ARRRRRGHH" the music itself is wicked.
As long as the band is tight and has talent I'll listen to them.

Rammnstein? I've heard OF them before, but haven't actually heard them.
Jeesus I can't type worth sh*t today!!

Ever gotten mild whiplash from head banging to Whole Lotta Love? Good Times.

Alot of my friends are into the death metal (Lamb of God, Mortician, Napalm Death) I can listen to it for a while but then I either get the urge to smash a window or kill a small mammal. But I have no problem blasting old-school Sepultura or Pantera at 7:30 in the moring on the way to school.

Not to make any more work here, but I'm seeing a lot of new bands that I would be interested in hearing, but I have no idea of what are their good songs.
Stuff like Metallica/Megadeath etc. are pretty mainstream and we've all heard their stuff, but Dream Theater for instance, what's the good stuff off their alblums errr, CD? I'm figuring that the guys that actually LISTEN to the music would point me in the right direction instead of using Google.
You see what I mean?
I'm always open to new sounds/styles and would love to check out some of this stuff but as I'm currently living maybe five minutes from where the high speed stops on my road it makes downloading a nightmare.
( Downloading just to check out the song that is, I wouldn't dream of getting the whole CD *cough*)

Just my .02

My favorite Dream Theater cd is by far is "Images and Words" if you just want to hear a lot of their music the "once in a livetime" has a lot of really good stuff mixed up. Train of Thought is a far cry from normal Dream Theater, its not NEAR as complex musically as the old stuff and much harder but its still a good cd. some other suff that I guess I could add this this list that you may want to check out
Porcupine Tree (love their latest cd)
Liquid Tension experiment (just music)
Kings-X
Spocks Beard

Dream theater did some very metal songs

Listen to 'pull me under', 'war inside my head', 'fatal tragedy', and 'the glass prison'

although they're progressive rock, and went highly soft, like 'goodnight kiss', 'space dye vest', and 'solitary shell' (all amazing songs, highly recommend) they still did some awesome metal songs.

Cool. I fondly remember the '80s when Metal was king! At the time I was into bands like Queensryche, Rush, Metallica, and Van Halen. As well as guitar virtuosos like Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Greg Howe. These days I'm into Progressive Metal - Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, Arena, Andromeda, Devin Townsend and a whole bunch more.

Wouldn't call Spocks Beard anything near metal. They are great but not heavy, their sound is more neo-prog rock than metal. Lots of Yes, Genisis and Gentle Giant influences. I'd recommend starting with "The Kindness of Strangers" or "V". Their latest album "Feel Euphoria" is minus Neal Morse, haven't heard that yet.

Depends what you call Metal I suppose. Dream Theater are very heavy at times, they've even covered "Master of Puppets" and "Number of the Beast" as encoures at their shows. I'm talking about the entire Metallica and Maiden albums! Must have served as the inspiration for "Train of Thought".

Just picked up Fear Factory's new album today, and while its no Demanufacture(best FF album EVAR!) pretty good stuff. Got sick of listening to it though, now listening to Soul Of A New Machine.
Picked up Tool's Undertow on vinyl too, odd thing is, for a record, it's lacking in bass, completely. Like less than the CD. Very very weird, I'd have expected more from a 2 album set. Oh, well. :(
I'm not really up on alot of new bands, find most of it rather boring. If I am in the mood for some good metal I pop in the old faithfuls "...And Justice For All" or "Master of Puppets".
Yes, some girls do listen to metal. :naughty:

ahhh... metal

don't get me started, i have been listening to metal since the late 80s :)

some of my favs:
metallica (puppets & justice)
slayer (seasons & reign in blood)
death (symbolic and human)
cynic (focus.... one of my top 3 favorite albums of ALL TIME... GO GET IT!!!)
morbid angel (dominate, covenant & alter of madness)
megadeth (rust in peace)
tool (undertow)
dream theater (images & words / metropolis pt 2)
the list goes on...

i really, really, really, really recommend anyone even REMOTELY into metal check out that cynic album i mentioned. it is INSANELY good (it may strike you as odd on first listen... it takes some getting used to).

Isn't P.O.D. a religious rock band? Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Has anyone heard the new ( well new to me) Godsmack tune Straight Out of Line? New drummer, Shannon Larkin, from what I heard. He abuses the sh*t out of his kit, in a good way.
I wonder why Tommy Stewart left as he was excellent too.
I have the Ozzfest err, dammit! I forget what year it is now, it's the last year that Godsmack played. To watch Tommy play was just amazing. He's so fluid and powerful.
Tunes like Alive ( or Awake depending on who you ask LMAO) to see him effortlessly pounding the ride. Awesome.
Tool, what can I say. Tool, IMO, is one of the best most talented bands that has come along in a long time. Whatever instrument you're into, drums, guitar, bass, and let's not forget "the voice" they really have a wicked way of putting it together.
I'm going to go through this thread and start downloading some of the tunes mentioned and see what else is out there.
Limp? Except for My Generation, I could take or leave it.

How could I have forgotten Slayer. South of Heaven
Please, no more talk about Limb Bizkit or Lincoln Park (it's pop music) or other crap like that. That's not metal. Real metal actually involves the playing of instruments, well. Ozzy, Pantera (they're not my favorite though), Van Halen (no Van Haggar), all deserve a mention too. What about Alice Cooper? Oh, and I think Mettalica is severly overated. Don't get me wrong, I think they're a good band but it's all been downhill since Load came out, and people still think they're the best thing since sliced bread. :2cents:
