Geo Prizm Idle rev

I have a 96 Geo prizm w/ automatic transmission (no tachometer)...
I noticed that the car was close to stalling when idle so I increased the idle rev. The car is better now but I noticed that it shifts later than before...I'm afraid that it will go over it's suggested redline when I push it hard but can't be sure since I don't have a tachometer.
Anyone got some suggestions?
