Car will not start

1992 Honda Accord LX
5-speed
170,000 miles

On the way to work after a hard rain (8") I drove thru deep water at low speed without incident, however I hit a flooded area at 40mph just before a stop sign. When I got to the stop sign the check engine light came on and the car stalled. It restarted without a problem but stalled 10 miles later at the next stop sign. Again restarted without a problem and ran fine for 15 miles. I was doing 60mph on the highway when the check engine light came on and the car started to loose power and shake, there was also a loud ticking that lasted for 10 seconds or so. It then cleared up and I pulled into a gas station where it stalled and would not restart. I opened the hood and it smelled like a wet wood or grass being burned. An hour later it started and was driven 5 miles to a friends house where it stalled and would not restart for the next 3 days. I have since installed a new fuel pump, and filter. I had the plugs, wires, cap and rotor changed in the last 2 months. About a month ago after a rain it just turned over but would not start. I pulled some fuses to check them, all seemed good so I reinstalled and it started. Any thoughs as what to check next!! Thanks

Yup u probably have water inside ur engine. Thats pretty nasty, very hard to fix. Theres probably very little that u can still start the car but maybe 1 cylinder has the water in it and thats flooding it. that would make the check engine light come on, cuz its thinking u have a bad plug cuz its not igniting. To fix it, if thats the problem, it would envolve taking the engine out and then taking the pistons out to let all the water come out. Very extensive process. You dont happen to have a cold air intake do u? Cuz w/ those u are more likely to get water inside the block

I had a 92 Honda Accord myself once. Same - 5 speed Great car.
Usually a warmed-up engine will dry out its own ignition but....
First check the distributor for dampness inside the cap and rotor area especially. Most likely that's it. It must be absolutely dry, use a hair dryer to really dry it all out..
Also remove all the plug wires and be sure they are dry inside the caps where they conncet to the plugs and distributor. If you got cheap or general pur[ose wires they may not be sealing as good as the originals.
Since you've driven it after the bath the cylinders are probably dry inside but be sure there is no water in the oil. Checking the dipstick watered oil will look like a chocolate milkshake. If so change it and the filter immediately.
Also check the high voltage wire going to the coil - same procedure both ends must be dry.
If all that's no help check for dampness in electrical connectors, the under hood fuse box, - anything electrical. - but usually that stuff is fairly well sealed against splashing.
If you really dunked it you should also check your transaxle oil, but that wouldn't keep it from starting but you could damage the parts inside from water by leaving it.
All your wheel bearings are the sealed type if I remember correctly so those should be OK.
I really doubt that water could get into the gas tank unless the car was totally under water, but you said that has been checked already.
I hope any of that helps you.
Next time go around the puddles or slow down.
