what would be a good first mod for my 1990 celica st

i’d start with increased/better air flow….i.e. Intake, Exhaust, Header etc. etc.

def do intake headers and exhaust... then depending on how many miles.. (mine 140k) try doing things like port and polish then getting big bore throttle body and big bore intake monifold, and chang your Plug wires, spark plugs, and capaciter witha good roter,.... after all that you should have around 190-220HP Depending on what parts / miles on engine

after that do lightening... youll be amazed at what 300 pounds outta your car can do off the line....

after the lightening get new schocks and struts DO NOT GET NEW SHOCKS AND STRUTS BEFORE YOU AT LEAST LIGHTEN YOU CAR A GOOD AMOUNT, ive seen cars that put on shocks and struts to lower there car and put very hard schocks on, whe nthey lightened there car the found there car was higher (cuz the less weight) and that the schocks were now too hard because the less weight..... (that was only after a very good amount of lightening though, if yoru only taking off like 100-300 pounds its actualyl a good idea to get harder/lowering springs.)

from there theres only a limeted amount of possibilities like turbo ....etc

i hate to keep arguing with you dude but i dont see how you are going to gain anywhere near 100 hp with those mods.... CAI headers exhuast myabe 25 if you are lucky.. the port and polish is the only thing that will give you almost a lot of power with at least 25 depending on what stage you get..there are many types of portings for many different applications. what is the deal with a big bore intake manifold?? you know when you port and polish you do that to the intake manifold and where it connects to the head...and the plugs wires and rotor maybe 10 and all of that is being generous..still a good car though

but dude if i were you the first and cheapest thing to do to any car looking for more performance would be intake headers exhuast plugs and wires... that will give you a little more without spending more then 6 or 7 hundred dollars.

and when reducing weight in your car, do i alittle at a time so you can adjust to the way it drives and handles, ive seen people remove rear seats, spare tire, air bags, and light weight parts all at once, and he lost control of his car cuz he couldnt handle it.

Plugs/plug wires/ rotar : 5-15 Hp ....iridium plugs nolgy wires

Cai is gunna give you between 10-15 depending on what u got, if you can get a heat shild for it, and have a big bore throttle body (lets you suck in more air through the throttle body) ive seen cars with cai, heat shild and big bore throttle bodys get at least 25 horses

headers are actually not gunna give you much if you get something like pace setter, those are maily to give you better gas mialage, if you can find greddy headers and get greddy exhaust with a high flow / no Cat at all your lookin at another 25 horses, (never get pipes much bigger than your stock, you can lose a signifigant amount of backpressure and end up with less horsepower you had with the stock exhaust 2.5" is a good thing to go with, 3.0" if ur gunna turbo )

port/polish: actuallly to everyones dismay port and polish dosnt really give too much horsepower at all, it just rejuvinates what youve lost through the years but does add 10-20 depending on what kinda job you had done to it (like kid said)....but with the big bore throttle body and the intake you should be lokin at another 5-10 on top of that

oh and port/polish is whre they clean out your intake chambers all the way to the combustion chambers, they dont do anything to your intake manifold where it connect to your throttle body...only where it connect to the intake on your engine....with a bored out intake manifols you can suck in more air....

lets run through the numbers oh and by the way...the stock gt comes with 130 hp

plugs: 5-15
Cai w heat sheild, throttle body: 20-25
Exhaust/headers: lookin anywhere from 15-30 horses
port/polish: at least 20 prob around 30 w bored manifold combined with the cai and throttle mody....a bored intake manifold wont do anything to a stock intake setup

your lookin at most 90 extra horses with a lot of time...money...and fabricatoin.....now lets do some more math

i dont mean to be a dick but youve contradicted everything i say...your looking at the bases of things...just becuase i buy cai dosent mean i dont add something else to it I.E heat shild makes it suck in only cold air....

and you forget things alone add X amount of horsepower... but things combined together add even more, hence if i got just exhaust on car A...Just headers on car B.....And the same exhaust and same headers on car C

car a would be lookin at about 10 horses
car B would be lookin at 10 horses
car c would magically have around 25 horses because the free flowing exhause now...not it dossent go from restrictive to open or open to restrictive...its open all the way through.....just like the revamped intake setup i mentioned with the throttle body cai ...etc....

again im not trying to be a dick just provn my point

no the st's have the 4sfe's i believe which come stock with 105 h/p or round abouts... but everything else sounds correct

the only honest way i think you will get that much hp out of those mods is by doing it to a bigger engine...keep in mind how small these engines are and to produce over 100 hp you already need pretty good parts on the car....so when you add after market parts they are better but they are only so much better and i just disagree on the gains you think you will have. i have seen nor heard anybody talk about such gains. i am just saying be realistic and dont go by what the company says you are going to get unless you see dynoed papers. seriously plugs wire and rotors 15 hp....maybe maybe if you get msd but thats still giving it a lil extra. and when you say get a bigger throttle body you have to think does that car need that much more air? and could it use it properly when it receives it...the stock computer probably wouldnt process it and even if it did you wont have enough fuel going to your cylinders to compensate for it. there is three parts to this equation...yes when you add two of the parts you get a little quicker but you cant just keep adding those to parts and expect to keep getting gains. also you have to keep in mind where the gains are going to be added on the rpm scale. things like CAI are going to help low end but larger headers and exhuast system will be top end.. therefore taking a little bit from the low end. :2cents:

yeah i get what ur sayin...you can only stick so much air in a 1.6 liter enigne... ut my frind has a corolla with only Cai..bigger throttle body...nology wires high flow distributer cap and iriduims and he has like 140Hp on a 4afe... thats like 20-25 for the intake throttle body and 10-15 with the new ignition things
