1999 Mustang fails Emissions test in Texas

I just bought a 1999 Mustang 35th aniv edition, from my bank,and took it to get inspected and wouldn't you know it it failed miserably. Seems a number of the systems came up as "Not Ready". Seems the car had a bad battery, and it sat for a couple of weeks with the battery out of it, and the Tech at the testing place seemed to think that has something to do with the "Not Ready" issue. It came up on the ERG, O2 Sensor and several others I have never heard of before. Any ideas as to how to get this show back on the road? I have a 17 year old about to dance out of his pants to get going.

Computers can do some weird things with a bad/weak battery. Suggest you drive it quite a bit over several days as the ECM may have to "relearn" everything. Then, take it to Autozone for a free scan and see if they come up with any codes.

I take it they just do a "read out" type of OBDII emissions test there?? If there are any codes at all, you fail. Is the check engine light on???

Sorry about the delay getting back....But yes the Check Engine Light did come on just prior to messages coming up. I wouldn't have taken it in, if the light was already on, because that is an automatic grounds for Failure. I will run it for several days, and thanks for the headsup on the Autozone deal.

~I think you mean EGR instead of ERG? EGR is your exhaust gas recirculation. it takes inert gases from the exhuast and stuffs them into your combustion chamber for emission purposes. if your o2 sensor is catching readings it might be because the EGR valve is bad. just a thought though.

Your right, I fat fingered the keys once in awhile, in fact, more than once in awhile. Right now the O2 Sensor is giving a "Not Ready" signal to the testing computer.

Get new battery, disconnect the old one, wait 15 minutes (for all the power to drain) install new one then drive the car a liitle on the street and highway so the computer can remap the spark and fuel curves. Worked on my 92 GT, hope it works on yours too.
