Swamp Coolers?

I have a 74 Super Beetle, and I'd like to either:

1. Put a swamp cooler on it
2. Install an a/c system in it

Which one is going to be the easiest and most cost effective? I have a feeling it's the swamp cooler, but I can not find one to save my life. Can anyone help?

Do not install an air conditioning system in your Beetle. That's exactly what I used to do as a line mechanic at a VW agency way back in the early 70's. All those AC units are a non-VW after-market unit. The compressor is made by York. How can I explain this nicely?...."It's a half-ass design." Yeah, that about describes it. I used to joke about needing a larger shoe horn to install it! The heat exchangers mount UNDER the car. The first time you high center that Bug....it's hundreds of dollars of damage! Also, if you ever drive on salted roads during the winter time, the electric fan motors will be trash. Around Reno, the average add-on AC unit lasted about 3 years, and then it was Kaput! You'd be better off getting the rear window accessory to where you can open the back of the window a couple of inches and have air blowing through the car from the vent windows on the doors.

I'll give you the same advice I jokingly give to very young guys who want to get married: "Y-o-u-'ll b-e s-o-r-r-y."
