Vibrating steering wheel & shaking mirror, normal?

I just bought an 04 Grand Am, the drivers side mirror shakes and worsens at higher speeds. The steering wheel vibrates at about 60 and worsens at higher speed also. Dealer has replaced mirror twice and says the vibrations/shaking is within specs for this car. Does anyone else have this problem? Its drivin me insane. Thanks.

it could be a bent axle thats what my old 91 cavy. did i never got it fixed

It sounds like the wheels on the car needs to be balanced. As far as the mirror goes... my 02, it's driver side mirror tends to shake/vibrate when i'm driving at a higher speed. I just never brought it to the dealers attention. To me it seems like the cable that holds the mirror is a little loose or something. I figured it doesn't impair my vision, so no need to be concerned

my 01 did the same when I purchased, turned out that the wheels needed to be balanced. Allignment might also need to be done and check for bad struts by looking underneath your car near each wheel. If you see the strut covered with fluid then you are more that likely going to need to replace the strut.

Thanks for your help and suggestions! I am in the process of fighting it out with the dealership now. They say that the shaking and vibrations are within specs for this car and the way it rides. I think not! I actually think its getting worse the more I drive. So far, I hate this car!! Thanks again!!

i got a 96 grand am GT 4 door sedan. no shaking in steering wheel or mirrors. NOT VERY NORMAL FOR U! lol If your auto-savvy, I would reccomend making sure mirror bolts are tight. same with steering wheel bolts.

I can't believe the dealerships tells you that the steering vibrations are within specs..
If you don't complain enough, they will try to give you some stupid excuses. They would rather give you some lame answer than fixing it under warranty.

One way to find out is have them drive with you their other new 04 Grand Am and that would shut them up.

If the dealer starts telling you stuff like that's within the specs, it's time to go to another dealership. The dealer i bought my car and NORMALLY had my car service was telling me that there was nothing wrong with my car, when the trans wasn't shifting... and fighting with them, didn't seem to help. I brought my car to a different Pontiac Dealer and the car was fixed within a day. I also called Pontiac, they told me try a different dealer if it doesn't get resolved that they would help me out somehow, (thankfully it did get resolved) If it does come down to it they will call the dealership and find out why they aren't fixing the problem... I've even got them to do that once!

dirt in the wheels , balance , rotors , brakes , ties and ball joints , bearrings axles and racks. I was told this is a good trouble shooting order to look at for wheel vibrations. It is most common to get wheel vibrations from dirt in the wheel making it drive like a vibrator.

So it came down to me fighting with GM...they told me that the engineers are well aware of the problem, that it poses no threat as far as the safety of the car, and they are working on it. I never got a definitive answer as to why it does it, but they offered to send me a free oil change. I will never purchase another Pontiac as long as I live, and I keep hoping it will get swept away in a freak tornado...grrrrrr.
