I have an 86 el camino with the stock idiot lights and no tach. These have to go. I want to get a guage cluster and tach from a monte ss, but have no idea what is involved in converting them. Ive found clusters that have the "all important plug necessary for conversion", but they dont actualy know anything about it. :banghead: Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not positive but I am going to guess you will need the wiring harness for the engine also. Have you done a search for websites on el caminos?

The wiring harness likely was the same, and the gauge cluster just plugs in the way the old one did.
I am not sure on your car but other GM and AMC vehicles I have done this on did the same thing.
This is much easier for the manufacturing process to use one harness for all applications.
The oil pressure and temp sender units would have to be changed.
IMHO most factory units were not very good, compared to the aftermarket. I prefer to use good aftermarket mechanical gauges, mounted below the dash, or, if its not a collector vehicle I care about, I will just drill some 2 inch holes in the dash itself for the gauges.
