How wide do I need ?

First things first, please don't flame this email. I am a fan of the wankel engine and hope to some day (when I have more money) build up the 88 rx-7 gsl thats currently sitting under a tarp in our neighbor's heated garage. But for a summer project, I've got an 85 gs rx7 that I'm putting a 1993 chevy 305 TBI in. This is going to make ALOT more power than the worn out 12a did and the 6" wide tires just aren't gonna take it. I'll probably use this as a daily driver because my beater (90 cavalier :p ) is going all to heck and falling apart. What would be a good wheel width to use so that my tires just won't spin off whenever I try to accelerate quickly ? Would I be ok with 8" wide ? 10" ? I'm not planning on building much into the engine, so your looking at just over 200 horse and around 300 ft lbs of torque. Thanks for the help guys, pity the newb :icon16:

Tim, talk to Grant @ TireRack, he could tell you what is good and bad to get, but I have some 17's with brand new tires if you are interested for this project car of yours, my email is [email protected]

You would definatly be alright with an 8" (or a 10")wide wheel. Even with the 6" you wouldn't really have to worry about spinning the tires all the time. A larger diameter will keep them from spinning as easily. I would say, whether you get the 8 or 10, go with whatever you think looks the best on the vehicle.

I say go in the middle, with an 8, but that's just me.

Thanks alot Dsilver. Something important that I forgot and left out of the first post though: I'm going to keep the factory rx-7 rear end gearing: if I'm not wrong its 3.9:1 Isn't that going to be difficult to keep from spinning in a car that weighs a little over a ton ? Thanks again guys.

Tim, send Grant an email or something, he is a moderator, just look for him in the list, or find one of his posts and contact him that way, he may or may not know about the possible spinning problem...

The 8" or 10" will be fine for that vehicle. Like I said earlier, if you think they will spin that easily, get a larger diameter tire/wheel.
I've driven vehicles on the road before with 10" wheels and well over 1200 ft. lbs. of torque (with regular street tires) and never had a problem with being able to control the tire spin.
