Hi All,

Quick question and please don't flame me for these as you can see by my SN that I am not as wise in the fiel of Toyota's as I am in Honda's.
Could someone please list a brief description of the engine codes, body chassis codes and current terms for the different Supras? This is VERY importnat to me!!! :)

The reason I'm asking is because I've got an opportunity to purchase an '89 Toyota Supra Turbo which is all stock and in pretty good shape. I can't seem to find any good Supra forums or more importantly any that are dedicated to the third generation Supras. I'm already a member of this forum but mostly post in the Integra section.

I'm curious if this car is going to be something I'm really going to enjoy or more of a headache so if anyone has some reliable information pease list it here. Again, if someone could post the different engine codes and what year / model they came in, the chassis code and which years those fall under, and any / all current terminology regarding the Supra that would be dope!! Thanks all... keep on rockin'! ;)

~Keith

Yes that's the third generation, 86.5-92 (turbo is 87-92), the MKIII. There were only a few MKIII options available in the US, n/a or turbo, targa or hardtop, TEMS or no TEMS. Turbo is called the 7M-GTE, n/a is called the 7M-GE, the blocks are different, electronics, transmission, DS, rear end, lots of stuff. If you have any MKIII questions I can answer them, but if you just have something against me then feel free to go to www.supraforums.com or www.supramania.com . If it's worth it depends on how much you like the car, I've explained this all before. Basicly you won't get your money back, if you do a full rebuild, turbo upgrade, some mods, it's only going to sell for alittle more than a untouched decent MKIII. So it's all up to you, I have no problem dumping money into the hole because the car is "for me" and nothing else it like a Supra, you might feel differently though. I can tell you this though, it will be a HUGE step up from a honda/acura. RWD, turbo, and torque are worlds apart from hi revving n/a FWD 4-bangers, you'll never look back and you'll probably question why you ever tried to make a teg fast in the first place :p . The only problems to watch out for are rod-knock and BHG (blown head gasket). BHG is very common on turbo's, the higher heat and higher HP plus undertorqued head bolts are a bad combination. If you plan on high HP a MHG (metal head gasket) is a must. There have been a few "first mods" posts here so just do a search for it and it'll come up, those will give you a good idea of what you can do and how much HP to expect. You really don't need to worry about chassis codes, but if you want to know here in the US we only got the MA70 (early turbos were MA71, still the same chassis though). Jap/AUS/europe got all the rest of the MKIII's, MA70's, JZA70's, and GA70's. So other than the HG and rod knock everything else is routine maintanence/problems and the cars are very relibable with amazing potential  .

~Keith Be prepared to spend some money, but they are wicked fast - mods required - Replace entire suspension at Suprasport.com for about 1200.
