Airbags? (Not suspension)

Ok,

I know anything is possible with the right amount of money, but I had a thought today. The 92 civics have safety airbags. I know the 92's were pretty different from the 88-91's but what do you think it would take to swap a airbag system into my 91 civic? The reason I am asking is becuase my little sis is getting her license soon and she would like to drive my car (I'm at college right now and don't have it with me). The deal is, my mother is the concerend type and doesn't want her daughter driving anything without airbags. Personally I think it is stupid but then again I'm not a a parent. Instead of letting her drive the 91 civ, my parents are serioulsy considering purchasing a civic with air bags. Again, I think this would be a waste of money and style points, being that the 88-91's are the coolest things out there. For my mothers sake, How hard do you think an airbag swap would be and I was wondering if anyone had ever attempted such an undertaking?

Sorry about the length
THanks

It so would not be worth doing. You have a bunch of sensors you have to install thru out the car. Running all the wiring to the steering wheel, different steeering wheel. And if one sensor is wrong it could blow the bags any time or even not work at all. The only test is to get in to a accident. Hmmm dont bother

:werd: It could end up worse if everything isnt 100%

imagine an airbag going off out of no where when your on the free way going 70mph, knocks you unconscious, your car runs out of control into the concreate median barrier, and your car does a few flips in the air... Paramedics arrive on the scene and the police clsoe down the road, because its going to take 3 hours to find every single part of your body lying across the road.

Ya - so not worth it - by far. You could get a decent 92+ civic for cheaper than the install of an airbag system. Don't bother.

id have to agree, just running the wires would take forever, and would need to be perfect, cuz airbags can blow for no reason, as mentioned above. ive seen another mechanic get whiplash when a bag he removed from a car exploded on the table.

i say convince your mom about the dangers of airbags. My sister was in an accident a few years ago and the only reason she was hurt was because of the airbags. She was holding a cd player and something else and when the airbag went of it threw the stuff into her face and really fucker her up. Her face was swollen for over a week.

Airbags hurt people who sit too close to the wheel, don't wear thier seat belts, etc. And sometimes small people (short, or whatever). The old first generation airbags like what are in the 92-95 civics, are worse about that, because they only have 1 speed, fast. New airbags have 2 speeds, fast and slow (triggered by the collision detection thing).

On top of that, it's not commonly known that the old airbags use the same explosive charge to inflate the bag as most fighter-jet pilots in the US use to eject, its just not as many of them. Modern ones have 2 charges, 1 explodes for a slower collision, both for a fast one. Each charge is simply 1/2 the power of the old charge's strength

So if you sit too close to the wheel, or have your kid in the front seat, maybe you should think about it. For those who abide by the guidelines set for airbags, they can save your life.

if she is worried about safety get a roll cage installed in the civic maybe that would help her with a racing seat and a 3+point harness thats if you REALLY wanna have safety then that IMO would be the way to go

Points are very well taken, especially the one about me being splattered all over the road. Thanks for the suggestions, the one about 1st and 2nd generation airbags was really interesting. Again the AF community saves the day
Thanks
(I will recommend my mother get a WRX Sti if she wants safty :naughty: )

As a firefighter, I see quite a few crashes up close, and the results of them.

IMO airbags suck.

Rarely do they go off when they are supposed to, instead in light collisions, not or delayed in heavy collisions. They usually cause more injury than would be had (though they do help once in awhile). Do some research on the bill that was passed to require air bags and your eyes will open. Personally I will never own a vehicle newer than 1996 with out changing the seat belts and disabling the air bags, or an older one without disabling them as well.

random fact: after the first couple years of airbags being required, NHTS stopped recording injuries directly due to airbags because they outnumbered the injuries prevented so much.

WOW that is crazy!

Two questions...why would get new seat belts?
and why only in vehicles after 1996?

I am going pass this onto my mother

This has turned into a good information thread

Now I feel good that I don't have air bags

Thanks

After about 1996 seatbelts were designed to stretch more to alllow the airbag to absorb more impact, so when the airbag doesn't go off :/

also in 96+ all cars are OBDII and have better diagnaustics if you take it to a mechanic and you dont know the problem
