'88 escort GT

Hello, I recently acquired an '88 escort GT. It was mechanic owned since new. I would like to know if there are any do-it-yourself upgrades and modifications to get a little more horsepower. Also I get a small amount of drive train vibration when disengaging the clutch when car is cold. Is there a simple fix or am I in need of a new clutch or tranny? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
