Oversized Tires

I have a 91 Cherokee with a 3" lift kit and 265-75 Dunlops. The problem is that the inside of the tires sometimes rub the leaf springs in the rear. This only happens when the Jeep is loaded down in the back. The wider tires leave the inside face of tire only about 1/2" from the leaf springs. I don't want a blow-out, but I don't want to spend a ton of money to fix.

I was thinking of just putting 5/16" wheel spacers on the rear tires to push them out away from the leaf springs. Any thoughts?

Do you have aftermarket wheels on your Jeep?

To tell you the truth I am not 100% sure. How can I tell? I bought the car used and it already had the rims on there. I put the new Dunlop 265/75's on there when I bought it two years ago. My mechanic thought they might be Chevy Rims, but I am not sure.

I had gone to the junkyard to get another rim so I can have a full-sized spare and get rid of the doughnut. I got the rim off of a Jeep Commanche and put the spare 265/75 tire on it.......so I guess the 265/75 tires fit on a stock Jeep rim. And I can't think why someone would get different rims if the 265/75 tires fit on the stock rims (and the rims on there now are just steel, not alloys or anything).

What do you think? Should I try the 5/16" spacers?

Chevy rims would not fit a Jeep. They must not be OE wheels because 265 tires would not cause a clearance issue with a Cherokee. I think you should get some new Aftermarket(Properly sized) or OE(I recommend) wheels.

You don't think 265/75's on OE rims would cause the tires to rub the leaf springs? What size are standard on the 1991 Jeep Cherokee, 15" rims?

I will measure them when I get home from work and see what I have. I don't want to do the spacers, but it is the cheapest alternative right now. Even if I do the spacers, I may need to get longer studs.....unless I can get 4 used rims to fit the 265's for under a $100.

Stock is 15x7, dunno the offset. I wouldn't reccomend the spacers unless you have extended studs however Ive never seen these for Jeeps but they may exist.
