Cams??

I own a 2000 Civic Si and was planning on getting a vortech supercharger in the future, but i wanted to get some cams soon. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good set of cams that would be good n/a and good for when i get the vortech. Any suggestions would be helpful..thanx...

I hear the jun3 and the crower 403 are good cams for NA setup....Also i think there is a person who has a 400+ si with jun3

yea i would try going with the Crower, Jun, or Spoon Sports cams. I think any of those three should do the trick. :D

unfortunatly my friend cams for both are not related. first you have to understand both styles of induction. forced induction relys on compressed air to increase oxygen content in the combustion chamber, where as naturally aspirated engine's rely on the amount of air that can be sucked into the engine from cam ramp and duration and overlap. the problem lies here. a cam designed for a f/i sysatem will not be good for an n/a system in general because they do not rely on the same flow patterns. a set of jun 3's may open quiker and stay open longer with more overlap between intake and exhaust cam action for n/a which is great but for f/i that overlap is going to kill you. not so much because of the air it flows in but the air it flows out. in an n/a setup the overlap is crucial to evacuate the cylinder but in an f/i setup it is nowhere near as critical because the increased cylinder pressures fill the space of evacuating exhaust gas (assuming the exhaust system is up to it) and evacuate the gases on its own. n/a cams are designed yo open big and stay open long on the intake stroke to get as much o2 in the chamber as possible, this is also aided by exhaust scavanging of the cylinder.

basically think about it like this

in an n/a setup you are relying on a big huge cam to open them valves up wide to let alot of air in and the exhaust to suck all the bullshit ignited air out in order to achive the best combustion possible

in an f/i setup your not so much worried about either. stock cams are usually the best with a little cam timing. this is because that compressed air from the turbo or supercharger is craming alot more air into a given space because of the compression itself. well you dont wanna waste that cmpression so you dont want any evacuation that is extended for any period of time. and a huge intake duration isnt necessary because the turbo or super determines the amount of o2 coming in.

basicaly for n/a for the most power your looking for someting that opens them up big and wide to allow better breathing

and for f/i your looking for noting but keeping the intake and exhaust duration to a minimum. which is basically stock unless you are flowing a LOT of air.

p.s. remember everything is vehicle specific to an extent but shouldnt variable from that

email vortech on what you should do. They will have a better answer than any of us.

not really unless it is wild ass profiled and you have some internal mods. I'd save cam for right before you get into that motor

and to add to what jon said, really wild profiles on a sohc motor put extreme stress on the rocker arms because of thier positioning in the head, not to mention the other valvetrain components like valves, springs, valve guides etc.. so you might wanna think about that also.
