you sould take off the base cap and then you can see three screws there. you should open those too

What do you mean by "base cap" and how do you remove it? I have a 2000 Jetta TDI with electric windows and the passenger window just dropped inside the door.

the 2000 and 2001 i believe but definatly the 2000 used plastic window clip retainers in the elec window tracks. they brake on all the cars if they haven't already they will. there was a recall on this to replace them with better quality or metal ones... don't both fixing it yourself. take it to the dealer they have to take care of it it is their mistake. with the advent of the newer, faster, stronger motors they put in the newer window systems, it was stupid of them to try and save money on plastic peices. check out www.alldatadiy.com for more info on recalls and repairs on all cars. the recalls are free... the repair manuals cost $20 for the first car you subscribe to and i think 15 for each additional car a current member adds. or if someone sponsors you and gives you a password for a discount.
yea but don't even bother fixing it yourself, this should be free covered.

Tanx for the info. In the mean time, I managed to get both panels off (the fascia one and the metal one holding the mechanisms and speakers)and did find the broken plastic window retainer. I am now arguing with the local VW dealer who reckons the costs are for my account (at the current exchange rate, that comes down to about $180.00)! Looks like I will have to take it up with VW head office!

see this is why i told you not to mess with it. of corse they are gonna say it was your fault. if something is covered under warentee or a recall... you don't touch it or at least leave trace you did. they are going to do everything they can not to spend extra money on something they don't want to. specially if it was their fault and they have to do it to every car built those years.
try the fight, but i can almost bet they won't care and will brush you off.
