AMERICAN!!! Nothing better than having a BBQ in southern Cali, sun going down, temp dropping, red sky, cool beach breeze blowing. Cooking up a New York strip steak, mashed potatoes, and an ice cold Lost Coast beer in hand. Goddamn, too bad it's only Tuesday. :banghead:

nothing is better than charcoal grilled burgers or a nice fat porterhouse steak. Chinese food is just taking a bunch of meat and shit and throwing it in the deep fryer, throwing some tangy sauce on it, then throw it back in the fryer and give it more grease for flavor. I hate chinese food, it's just full of fat and grease.

None of the above, come up to Canada. Or better yet, Quebec. If you want meat - and I mean REAL meat, have a good meal at a small family owned restaurant up here. I guarantee...... there is no comparison.

On the other hand, cook yourself a nice meal. Whatever type of food you like best, and invite some friends over to share. Ain't nothin' like a home cooked meal

Dayna - Pavlova, vegemite, weetbix, meat pies, tim tams, sausage rolls

Blindside - My point was what differentiates a BBQ in America from a BBQ anywhere else? It is not what I would call 'American' cuisine. About the only 'American' cuisine I can think of is Cheeseburgers etc.

trust me, i know bbqs. personaly, I wish Argentine food was up there, cuz their BBQ is some of the best. American BBQ is more based on teh BBQ sauce, and partially on the meat, while Argentine is dependant on how it's cooked and the meat quality. also, american BBQ is mostly based on beef and pork, while Argentine is based on Beef and Goat (goat is really freaking good!) um... can't think of much else, back me up or prove me wrong, whatever.

Hey burnM, I'm assuming you live in Quebec. Ever been to Schwartz's or Gibby's? I visited Quebec last year and those places were musts. Best food ever...I could live off Schwartz's smoked meat. I walked out of Gibby's with a 500$ bill, and I'd pay double it in a second.

Probably because HE is American. When us Americans want a steak and BBQ chicken, we think of that as American food. We dont think "I want a good Australian steak" Or whatever country. Also when we cook that steak, we use USDA beef. Therefore, the steak we eat is American.

Why does it bother you anyway?

There are other forms of meat pies and sausage rolls that arent Australian. Chicken pot pie is American... There are Asian sausage rolls. If you are going to say steak isnt American, I'm going to say meat pies and sausage rolls arent Australian.

I have tons of friends that like middle-eastern cuisine, ranging from isirh, canadian, american, jamaican and so on. But since we have to stick with the poll then I vote Italian. I say BBQ being American because it seems to me that it's more apart of our culture than any other place I've ever heard of... I've never been to a place in the US where a BBQ story wasn't told. I apologize for it pissing you off but, like you said, cheeseburgers are an "American" food. Well if it doesn't have beef cooked into little burnt patties with some AMERICAN cheese on them it's not really an "American BBQ"... I also agree with what someone else stated... if you don't know what an American BBQ is... it's not your favorite food.

Personally I can't compare an American with another country's BBQ cuz... well I've never been to one. But there are plenty of good (I hope) people here that have and they can share their opinions on the difference.

So yes, I know other countries have BBQs... I just don't see it as a heritage thing like I do here... I'm sorry if I'm wrong, assume it to be my patriotism . Just the idea of BBQ is American to me, because I am an American. So please, no hard feelings on this miniscule topic...

I'd say BBQ is practically "American" Having travelled to several countries outside of the U.S. I can't say BBQ is very popular in the other countries I've been to.
I've never been to Australia, but I'm sure that OZ's panties are bunched up because saying that BBQ is "American" detracts from his favorite Australian sayin: "toss another shrimp on the barby" :)

yea japanese food is the chit. I love sushi, I'd eat it much more if it wasn't so goddamn expensive. Like 6 small sushi rolls is $4, I always get one or two as an appetite but to get full, would have to spend at least $30. But those choices are pretty bare, I'd have to choose thai food as my favorite also, thai food is really good and unique. Their spices and herb (basil and chili) combination creates a super good dish. Nothing beats pad thai or ki mow kai.

Got chicken on the grillers now, goin to go eat em now.

So YOU have never been to a country where BBQ is popular, so you think it must be an American thing?

To quote somebody else:

Ignorance is bliss.

BBQ is a frigging way of life in Australia and South Africa, dammit, we used to BBQ more times in a month in SA than the sum total number of BBQ's I've been to living in the USA for going in 4 years.

In SA, we never had that, we always had meat and beer :icon16:

I kinda have to agree with Oz and Ray on the barbeque topic. Barbeques have become Americanized from the Australian and South African versions you speak of. My families barbeques consist of beer and steak. I live down the street from a New Zealander and damn the stuff he cooks on the grill is good.

American food doesn't really seem all too unique or cultured food. Just slap on a piece of meat on the grill, with bbq sauce. Thai food and italian, those are unique where you can identify the country where it's from. I agree with Oz. humans have been cooking meat over fires for a long time, since the invention of fire. To say BBQ is american food is stupid, it's just b/c Americans haven't really invented anything too unique yet. I'm bet there were BBQ's before there was an America. American food, there really isn't a unique spice or American flavor. With Indian it's curry and cumin, Thai it's basil and chili among others, Italian it's tomato sauce, but with BBQ all countries probably use it, not just Americans.

Well actually, I live just west of the border of Quebec - about 15 minutes away in Ontario. My mother lives about 25 minutes away from me in Quebec. Every time I go to see her, I end up going out for food there. I've been known to drive an hour just to go to a place called Moe's in Pointe-Claire. It's the best place I know of for smoked meat. Cheap to buy, great taste, and HUGE portions :p
