my dads thinking about getting xenons on his E36 M3, so i have a few questions:
1: where can he buy xenon headlights, and how much do they sell for?
2:can he install them himself, or will he need to have a car specialist do it?
3:what color should he get?
4: what are pros/ cons of xenon headlights?
thanks guys, any helps appreciated

1. first of all, you want to purchse the Euro Ellipsoids, because HID's in the standard U.S. spec headlights don't look so good.. Sale of HID's are now illegal, at least in CA... so you just gotta find a good source that sells to people "for offroad use only."
2. Install isn't too difficult, as long as you're somewhat handy and can follow instructions.
3. Thats pure personal preference.
4. Pro's: SEE EVERYTHING. And it looks a lot cooler. Con's: Kinda pricey, illegal.. but not that big of a deal.

Are yoyu refering to HID's? If so go with the ellipsoids. I agree with fatninja the us specs lights are no good for xenon's (HID). The ellipsoids are a good way to go they are projectors which will enhance the beam better compared to the stock lights. They have a few brands of ellipsoids out there if you want quality go with zkw or hella. As for a cheaper alternative you can get some depo's. Or even try ebay for some.
You can check out umnitza.com they have a variety of ellipsoids and HID for sale. It is a basic DIY just follow the instructions they come with. The shops will charge you an arm and a leg for an install! The color is basically based on yourself just like what fatninja said personal preference. Again pro are because of the clarity at night and the quality of the ellipsoids which are not generic or cheap persay like the us headlights... I don't really see any cons with the lights!
If you don't want HID's just have you dad get some Vizu-bulbs from umnitza.com!

If you get OEM xenons that come out of a M3 you need the correct wiring harness to plug them in, you need a control moduel, which goes bad at times also the ignitors are prone to go bad and your lights wont work. Plus the price for the 15$ bulb compaired to the 4$ bulb. If you want the headaches you get with xenons then by all means get them.
