I'd say its mainly where you're from. Where I'm from in KY, about all you see is the fox body 5-oh mustangs, current style GT Mustangs and any kind of F-body.
I mean mustangs with NOS and F-bodies with programmers/superchargers are a dime a dozen.
The tuner cars haven't caught on as much here (people still have them, but they are mainly just looks and no real performance mods, so I guess you could say riced out instead of tuners).

mainy imports, something that is cheap to get a hold of and easily tuned, turbo cars are easy to make fast b/c the turbos sys. is very restrivtive form the factory and by removing the restrictions you can see lots of hp gains,
couple good canidates,
eclipse/talon (gsx,gst)
golf 1.8t
rx-7 1st, 2nd,3rd gen
supra
civics with swaps, b18,h22 ect...
mazda miata..
integras,
3000gt
basically you can take any car and tune it to be fast if you know wat you are doing..

Integras and hondas here. Most of them are slow as hell, with 2 ft boeing rear wings and 18 inch chrome rims, but there's the occasional nice one... a very nice supercharged prelude, among others.

I've found 6 for sale in the last 3 months, that's not including the 5 or 6 on ebay...just the ones around here. But in central illinois, the big thing is F Bodies, classic muscle, and newer GT stangs. With a small contingent of true "tuners"

The golf GTI with the 1.8Turbo motor can be a very quick car. Getting them to 300hp is not unheard of on the stock turbo. Im starting to see alot of GTI tuners in CT now. Also the GTI golf comes in a VR6 model and that also has a lot of potential. Theirs a few 400+hp VR6s running around so watch out.

Styling, price, and drivetrain. The VR4 is not a super car.
Anyhow, there are very few people around here actually tuning their cars. Most of them are rice or stock.

well i don't know about syling, if it performed like a ferrari the styling is just fine to me, but a supercar runs nothing higher than 12 sec in the 1320 and are no less than 150grand and have top speeds of over 200mph. i wouldn't even call a Z06 a supercar or a viper. a super car is the enzo, mclaren, carerra gt, koenigsegg, Zonda c12, F-50 etc those are supercars. not a car thats top speed is basiclaly 170mph and cost 44grand.

Off the subject, but I drove a 2001 Bullet Mustang today, pretty nice. Had decent power, but the best part was the exhaust note. Pulled out from a stop light and just went through 1st gear normal, shifted to 2nd, then nailed it and run it up to about 4500 or 5000 rpms and shifted to 3rd and it spun the tires and wiggled pretty good. I was impressed with it and I'm a Chevy guy.

Ohio is the realm of Camaros and DSM's, mostly. It's kind of odd, even though there's a Ford engine plant in town (you know, where they made the Ford 351 Clevelands) there's a lot more pro-GM sentiment in town.
DSM's are popular probably because of their low cost and AWD. Snow/Rust Belt folks like us have to think about that cold white stuff at least six months out of the year.

Sorry bro, I havent seen a bigger advocate for the Z32 here than you 1viadrift, but its NOT a supercar. If the bar were lowered that much, then the Supra and RX-7 FD would be supercars too.
The Z is a TOURING CAR. Its NOT a sports car or supercar. But that shouldnt suggest you couldnt modify it to supercar speeds and power.

The Japanese supercars are cars like the Nissan R390GT1 road car, Toyota TSO20. One could also make a case for the Orocho, the Dome, the Jiotta Caspitta, and other such one offs.
Currently in production, though, the closest thing to a "supercar" in production in Japan is the NSX, and that's more of a sub-exotic than a supercar.

i would give the gtr skyline supercar status purely because of all the streetcred it has. you have perfect handling characteristics coupled with a very powerful engine that can kick some serious ass stock with all that power transferred to the road through 4 wheels. i think youd be driving a seriously hard bargain if you didnt consider that a damn super sweet car.

My definition of a supercar is something that exhibits the finest of every quality- speed, handling, rarity, price, looks. Something that comes stock with these features, because almost anyone can tune a eclipse to hit 9's and 10's in the 1/4 mile, but it does not make the ecplise a supercar

i would consider ferrari enzo or pagani zonda as supercars. its a total different car class, they are more expensive, higher speed, lower production, even the owners are choosen rigorously...

Eclipse, RX-7, 300ZX...take your pick, their not supercars. EVERYONE wants to throw the word supercar around because they are enthusiasts to one car. The Saleen S7 is a supercar, the Mosler MT900 Photon is a supercar. Supercars run 11's, have top speeds of over 200MPH, and price Tags that the botton 98% of society cant afford.
Sorry to break your dreams, but your GTO, or your Z32 arent Supercars. Be happy with what they are, and dont try to make them up to be something that they are not. Its no different than a kid with his civic thinking its a sports car. Thats ricer attitude...

why is it illegal?
I do not know why, I am not the law.
I've heard from many many people that if you want to drive around a Ferrari, it has to be 15 years old or older to be legal. You can drive around a newer Ferrari, but you'd have to impotr from the states and it will then be subject to import-regulation requirements. It's not a huuuge deal but still something you have to go through to make legal.

the only reason you can call them super cars is because they have ultra high performance and bush the limits of what they can achieve with 280hp. Just image if the 280hp cap was lifted!! A lot of motoring journalist in japan are starting to feel that the 280hp limit should be abandoned in the pursuit of superior driving and development.

Now nobody likes EVOs or STis more than me, but those aren't supercars. Neither are Supras, RX7's, GTR's, etc... A supercar has performance that would make all those cars look tame, and you also get exclusivity and rarity with it. There are Japanese supercars, but most of you have probably never even heard of them since most people seem to think the Supra and Skyline are the fastest things to come out of Japan. where are you at, exactly, that would require you to import a brand new, world legal, ferrari from the states?
F cars and other exotics that are not road legal in the states are listed that way due to crash testing (which most likely hasn't been done) or ride height infractions...
IE. the gt3 porsche had to be lifted to make US spec.
but that doesn't mean it's an illegal car...

And he can do that because when he bought the car he bought it under the title of show car. I dont have any real proof, to lazy to look, but he says its not street legal so im just taking his word.

There is something called the "supercar law" or something, if they made less than some number (like 500?) of a car, you can import it and drive it legally as long as you don't put more than 2500 miles a year on it.
Hmm, they only made 400 Impreza 22B's...
