tachometer

ever since i got the car (96 stratus) last fall the tachometer would work sporatically..sometimes it works, sometimes it reads 0rpm, sometimes the spedometer is reading beyond 9000. there is no problem shifting and what not under the hood. i was wondering if there i a plug somewhere that might have come loose or is would the meter itself need replaced?
