detailing wheels with washes

Hey guys,
i have read alot of posts that recommend doing a wash onto chrome or alloy rims to make it more realistic in appearance, but how do you do it exactly.
Am i right i saying it would involve black paint and thinners?
i have never used thinners before but keep thinking that the thinners would eat into the paint already on the wheels?
I dunno.
Could someone please tell me how it is done as i want to use it on my next kit.

U could do something like that. Diallute the paint into a watery mixture and apply it on the rims. Mixture of the paint should be thinned enough to allow it to run.

I just read an article in the April Scale Auto Mag.

The article talked about using washes of acrylic paint (diluted w/ water)
and using a q-tip to apply/clean up the excess paint on the chrome.

What is nice about acrylic is it can be diluted and cleaned w/ water while wet.
