SVT Tranny problems

Yo call me Beaon, Im the proud owner of a 1999 Contour SVT.
Yes my car makes me cocky and yes, .... My car makes me cocky (i love my car did i tell you?) and for this reason the thought if it getting messed up is like death to me!
So heres the deal
Im having tranny problems. Only with one gear however. 3rd...
When i shift from 2nd to third, or from fourth to third, if i shift normally it grinds and takes a sec to go all the way in. I have to take extreme care and take it very slow in order to shift without it grinding. I can do it now almost everytime but it takes a long time to shift. Which means every dinky kid with a honda accord who thinks he has a shot actually does when i start to shift into 3rd and we cant let ricers think they had the lead! :nono:
So if any one has any thoughts to what this may be. A grinding into third gear. No other gear does it. And if i take it very very slow and carful i can avoid the grind.
Some have told me that its as simple timing issue and might be an affordable fix. Others say my tranny will have to be taken apart and we all know thats costly. I dont know anything about cars. So! im here to read and learn.
Any insight would be much appreciated!
id be happy to trade knowledge on this for knowledge on high end workstation PC's.
I can talk PC's all day long i know every rediculous thing you werent ment to know! so if you want to swap problems id be happy to!

This is a typical problem on the MTX-75 cable shift trans. Its not a timing issue. Add some Ford friction modifier to the trans which will help smoothen the shifts. Part number is XL-7. It comes in a 2 oz bottle. Only use half the bottle when applied. Only pour through the level plug only. If you really interested you can upgrade to the revised post 2000 syncros and shifter forks.

syncro maybe?
your correct, it is a syncro. The Ford friction modifier is just a bottle that that helps smoothen the shifts. Id try that since its the cheapest resort. If the grind still remains..time for a new syncro.

Hey Beaon... it is definitley a syncro... I have a 98 Contour SVT... I was having the exact same problem, and thought that if I took it easy into third that would be alright... well I just gone done spending over 2K to rebuild my tranny... so if by useing XL-7 you can prevent it I would suggest going that route... unless you have the 2k to throw around

You want the 2000 syncros since they were the best on the 2000 svt contours. The only 2 brands are the stock gears and the quaife straight cut gearset which is about $5000. Id suggest writing Terry Haines, the drivetrain engineer who designed our transmission for Ford and now has a motorsports dedicated to the Contour, especially for the transmissions of our cars. His email is [email protected]. I got my 96 mtx upgraded (quaife lsd, post 2000 shifter forks, zetec final drive, etc. I didnt need new syncros since i dont slam gears like most people do. 90K on the trans and still perfect syncros according to Terry) by him and well as hundreds of contour enthusiasts. Hes the only person I would trust when touching my transmission.
