Replaceing fuel pump 98 silverado z71

My fuel pump has went out on my 98 chevy z71 - I was wondering the easiest way to remove it. I was thinking about taking out the ft bed bolts and just loosen the rear and take a floor jack and lift the ft of the bed so I could reach the unit. Do you think this would work? ALSO, would i be better off to go back with a GM (AC Delco) pump over an aftermarket? Thanks any help would be most appreciated!!

from the files of been ther done that: be sure to support the bed with jack stands if you lift it. I had a s10 blazer body fall on my hand because I trusted a jack.

is the tank almost empty? i changed mine yesterday by dropping the tank because i have a topper and big-ass tool box in the bed. wasn't the most fun thing i've ever done but not too bad just 2 bolts holding the tank up you have to unhook all that other stuff anyway and it's always smart to clean all the crap out of the tank when you change the pump. what i did was unhook the filler hose, vent hose and wires(made sure you get the ground wire too) then support the tank on a jack, remove the straps and lower it a bit and push it over to easily get at the pressure, return& vent hoses. then i had to jack up the truck to slide the tank out. i'd say this is an easy way to do it if you don't mind rolling around on the ground for while. just soak the shit out of the tank strap bolts with penetrating oil before removing them. oh yeah replace the inline fuel filter too. it took me about 2 hrs from start to finish.

I've done this both ways, and it was MUCH easier to lift the bed verses dropping the tank. I didn't even use a jack, I just had one of my friends help me lift the bed up a few inches and then we slid it back until we had easy access to the top of the fuel tank. Be careful not to scratch the bed when your movin it around..especially areas close to the bumper.

I'd vote for unbolting the bed as well. We done this to a 1992 extended cab Z-71 about a year ago. 3 or 4 men can lift the bed off and then you hafe really easy access to the fuel tank.
