it is going to shut off when you take the battery cable off , have you put a volt meter on the battery to see if you are getting a charge?

Make sure if you change the alternator, that the battery is fully charged before you start the car. If it isn't, it may draw excessively at startup and fry your alternator.

yeah the bolt on the stud is tight and the battery was fully charged when i 1st crunk it up. would the heat off the open downpipe and the smoke short out the wire????

if you can get the car to start , take a test light and while it is running touch the test light to the stud on the back of the alternator if it lights up then i think you have a bad alt. , i would take it off and take it to your local parts store , they should be able to test it for you , if it dosen't light up then i would start checking the wiring
