6 cylinder 98 f150

I am looking at an f150 with the 4.2l engine. I have recently read some bad reviews. It is 98 model, does anyone have a good or bad experience with this truck.

Underpowered, and unreliable. Definately NOT like Ford's older 6 cylinders (you know, durable to the point of near-industructableness, and torquey).

the smallest i would get would be a 4.6, my old man gets low 20's out of his. Now the old 300 straight six was a motor to be proud of, people asked what i had in my truck i said 300 I-6, people laughed at me until i pulled a 350 around the parking lot, then they respected the old 300, great engine, sorry about rambling on, the 300 is my favorite motor.

The 300 is definatly a better 6 cyl. It is probably one of, if not the, best 6 cyl there is. The 4.2L is very underpowered and not as reliable.

I have a 4.2 2001, I used to have a chevy 4.3 v6 and you jab the throttle and it had incredible torque below 4000 rpm. The 4.2 I have now is little un-responsive (need new ignition coil)and not what I expected, but it is comparable to the 4.3 in torque. I have been told the 300 straight six is awesome, even better than 8 cyclinders of the time, besides who would'nt want a ever reliable well balanced straight 6
