Is it possible to replace the TCC on an 1985 V6 automatic with out removal of the tranny? I had my tranny rebuilt and I still get NO mechanical lock up at 55 MPH. I wonder if the repairer did what he said he did. Thanks for replies Rick

The TCC itself is located inside the torque converter, which should have been replaced when the transaxle was rebuilt unless you specifically asked it not to be for cost reasons. The problem is one of three things:

1. TCC worn out or TCC in new torque converter defective.

2. TCC hydraulic passages or valves restricted by sludge or dirt, or valve body incorrectly reassemlbed.

3. Fault in wiring to ECM on TCC solenoid or VSS, or defective solenoid or VSS.

If your speedometer is working, we can rule out the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) as a problem. Check the connector on the TCC solenoid terminals and make sure it is properly connected and not corroded. One way to check if the ECM is trying to engage the TCC is to connect wires from the connector plug and run them under the decklid and into the passenger window. Connect the leads to a test light, and drive the car at hiway speeds. The light should be on when driving a steady speed like 55mph. If it does, and cleaning the tranaxle contacts doesn't solve the problem, further diagnosis will require removing the transaxle.

Thanks for the reply Ragtop Renegade. I was leaning towards the repairer not doing what he said he did, because of the time he did it in. I did have a new converter and a new lock up switch replaced along with an entire overhaul of the transaxle. Looks like early AM call to the shop is in order for me. Car did try to engage the converter once but other than that it runs on 3 gears only 1st/2nd/3rd but no cruising drop down. Again thanks for the help....Rick
