93 Jimmy Transmission slow to shift... ?

I have a w series vortec motor with 4 wheel drive.
When going from park to drive, or park to reverse, it takes about 3-4 seconds to get into gear. (no big deal, but could have something to do with the rest of the problem.)
Also, it only wants to shift gears at about 3000 rpm while doing normal driving. It's like I have to drive it fast for it to act properly.
Is that normal? Since I've only had it a few weeks, I'm not really sure what's normal and what isn't.
In fact, it acts like a typical automatic transmission does when the vacuum hoses aren't hooked up properly. I had someone look at it, and they told me that there are no vacuum hoses. How could that be true?
Anyone have any thoughts? Or know what I should look at / for?

Ok... it looks like the "Throttle Valve Cable Assembly" takes care of those things and there are no vacuum lines.
Is that right?

You are right, I have a 93 as well, and there are no vacuum lines. There is a PCV valve hose that connects to the passenger side on the engine and another hose on the drivers side that connects to the air breather.
As for the Transmission, it sounds like it is taking a long time to shift considering those engines (I believe) peak at 5500rpm.
I would think that taking it to a Transmission place (Mr. Transmission, Pioneer Transmission, Coast to Coast etc) and have them drive the truck, they should be able to tell you some possible problems.
I know this sounds silly, but is the Tranny fluid full? Don't know if you know or not but you have to check the tranny fluid when the truck is running.
Low tranny fluid can make the tranny slip, or slow to shift IE: lag between gears.
Anyway, hope this helps.

oh and I just thought I would add that on my 93 Jimmy when it is REALLY cold out, that it seems to take long to shift from 1st to 2nd gear, like you said seems like it is revving to 3000rpm before it shifts. That is the only real problem I have ever had with my tranny. When it's cold. It usually only does it once and then it seems fine. I guess as the fluid starts to circulate.

Yeah, the fluid is ok. Between 1st and 2nd is when it seems most evident. (It kicks forward when it shifts if I'm not moving real fast.)
I did find some kind of relay near the passenger-side firewall that wasn't hooked up properly. It had one prong on the bottom, and three prongs on the top. I hooked that back up properly and it seemed to make things a little better. I'm not sure what it was and didn't find it in my books... just imagine it serves some purpose someplace. It wants to shift around 2500 from 1st to 2nd now.
I'll probably still run it to a transmission shop when I have time.

Yeah Transmissions suck when they break down, so it is still a good idea to take it in.
A relay on the passenger side... now you got me curious. I want to go outside right now to look at that relay... but I'm too tired. I'll look at it later.
