well its 1am and im biking home with my best friend from our other buddies house, we were having a little bon fire, and well, we were both riding bikes (bicycles) on the side of the road with no helmets, no lights and no bells, so we come to our departure points (where he goes right and I go left) and he says hey theres a cop on that back lane, and takes off, so Im like fuck...so the cop peels out and chases me down and pulls me over and says Who is your partner in crime...so I was like...well why exactly would I tell you that..and he's like okay, you want your fine? I was like...nooooo... and hes like that was ___ ___ wasnt it I was like...ummm... hes like wahts your name. so i tell him, he types it in or whatever and says that was ___ ___ wasnt it...I was like...yea..it was. and hes like okay, so your ___ ___ and your birthday is? you live where, your phone #...blah blah blah,

So at this point im wondering if im getting a fine or a ticket, and so he says to me, If I wanted to be a prick, I'd give you a fine, and go after your buddy, or show up at his house tommorow..Im just like..FUCK. and then he says, but since you co-operated ill give you a warning, but since your pal took off you can tell him, if he slips one more time, its 300 outta his pocket.. then he tells me, and you..I'll let you off again...but one more time and your $110 for no lights, $110 for no bell, and $75 for no helmet, you can do the math.

So now im pissed because I live in a small town, so I ride my bike everywhere, but if im caught with no helmet or light or bell or wahtever, im fucked. And now because I sorta..not really (he already knew who it was anyways) blabbed my buddies name out, he is fucked aswell.

Am I a rat? like I said, the cop asked me who I was, and who my budd was, then I wouldnt tell him, then he typed my name in on some kinda computer or palm pilot and said, okay...that was ______ ______ , now dont lie to me son. and I said..well yea that was him, and he said Oh I know who it was, I can tell by the hat (this kid is frequently getting haunted by the cops) I just wanted to see if I should give you a ticket or not. I dont llike liers.

Did I do the right thing to keep my $300 ??
I just feel really guilty for all this shit, I dont want my buddy to blame me if he gets fined, I feel like a fuck up and a rat.

a bell and foglights on a bicycle? are you shittin' me? we only have to wear a helmet if you're younger than 14 here.

I would have made up a name for you friend. i just can't beleive you get $300 worth of fines for not having that stuff on your bike.

Errrr.

Just follow the rules, for fucks sake. Do you feel cool not wearing a helmet or having a light? Also, what's wrong the cop? He let you off, what's the problem?

Sheesh. Even when cops are being nice they're dickheads. They just can't win.

I dont see what your problem with the cop is, sounds like he was just doing his job in a normal and polite manner - and he didnt even fine you.

The law on the other hand does sound fucking ridiculous. $110 for no bell, :screwy: I dont think Ive seen a bike with a bell on it in about 10 years, why the fuck would you even need one :eek7:
As for the hemet - wear it...might save you a brain injury if a car pulls out in front of you without giving way, as they often do.

you know i think you should do what ever you feel is right for you. those fines are a bit on the heavy side. it makes me wonder if legislation is a more advanced form of a babysitter. at some point the public will realize that its not up to a bunch of politicians to decide if i should wear a helmet or not. thats my decision, my head, and i will directly suffer the consequences. you know its amazing that the human race survived before there were helmets. one would think that without helmets and lights and horns on our bikes we would all be dead or retarted.

Im not exactly complainging about the cop, I was in a pissed off mood last night even though he let me go, but even he said, If I see you slip once, your gone buddy.

What I dont understand is there is a bar parkinglot full of cars peeling out of the parking lot with very noticeable drunk drivers about 40 feet from where I was stopped, there were drunk minors walking by when he was talking to me, yet he picks a 17 year old kid and his friend riding bicycles home for the night, minding our own bussiness, doing harm to no one, and he picks us of all people around to talk to? Yes it was nice he let me off, and im glad, because i dont have 300 bucks. but still, there is a parking lot full of drunks, and drunk kids less than a quarter of a block away. That is what pissed me off. And the fact is he knew myself and my friend, he stops to talk to us at least once a week, he knows we arent shit disturbers.

And to whoever said he was polite...LOL. He wasnt being excessively rude, or throwing me up against the car. but polite is the last word I would use to describe him.

That has to be the most RETARDED police charge I've ever heard. Where the fuck do you live again? Gestapo-ville? Where I'm at bells are useless because you can't hear it over anything, and helmets are almost a lost cause, considering how many H2-driving idiots run the stop lights. At least you got off with a warning.

I live In Deep River Ontario Canada. A very small town, so my guess is the town is low on money again... the cops only really stop you for anything when the town is low on cash... :disappoin

Man, I don't think you realise how much you risk simply not wearing a helmet alone.

I'm an ex Cat-A road racer and Pro-Elite MTB racer and never went without my helmet, even on light training rides.
A helmet is less than $300 and is one hell of a lot cheaper than the medical bills it can save you.

SonyMobile
04-25-2004, 04:30 PM
I never said wearing a helmet is not a risk, I no its a risk, I wear it when im jumping, but just touring around at speed that if I were to fall I would just have to plant my feet and nothing would happen isnt as important to me. I no its still a risk.

I can understand how having a light makes a difference, there is a major difference in visibility for other users of the roads,I actually usually have lights on my bike, but need new batteries, therefore they werent on the bike at the time. :icon16:

What I dont understand is what the hell is a bell going to do? someone is driving in a car at 40kmph (which is the speed limit around town) I highly doubt someone in a moving vehicle will hear "Ding Ding" when your behing or infront of them, or maybe im just stupid :screwy:

I also think the helmet law is dumb. By choosing not to wear a helmet I am taking a risk for myself, I think it should be like one of those laws sort of like the sign that says "use at your own risk" that way, if you fall, and crack your skull open across the pavement its no ones fault but your own. What exactly is the point of this law? maybe if I put my helmet on, and still splat my brains across a cars hood I could sue the police force for having a shitty law that didnt protect my brains properly?? am assuming someone is going to flame me for expressing my opinion so lets hear what you have to say about my opinion.

Am I the only one that thinks this is a stupid law? :screwy:

The bell is to warn pedestrians of your approach, it will help prevent them from stepping in front of you.

I don't think the wearing a helmet law is dumb, I have 2 friends that lost their lives riding bikes and both would be alive if they were wearing a helmet.
Yes, it was their choice, but think of the effect of them having made that choice.

BTW, if you 'splatted your brains across a car's hood' as you put it, the motorist would be in as much trouble as you. If you were wearing a helmet though, he would be in even more trouble as he would have had to be speeding to kill you. If you weren't wearing a helmet and it happened, there would be less liability on the motorist.

Don't come back with a flame, as an ex-cyclist I am trying to help you understand the reason for these laws.

I'd rather wear the helmet than pay a 300.00 fine though. If its the law theres nothing you can do about it, when I was younger there was no bicycle helmet laws however I remember being stopped for skateboarding, the officer told me that the town had outlawed skateboarding because of injuries and destruction of property. So I just didn't skate anymore, I couldn't really do anything about it.

Just stick the bell on your bike even if its useless, hook your lights back on, and wear the helmet. It may seem like a hassle but would you rather get a ticket everytime that cop see's you? Always better to have a cop that likes you because you cooperate than a cop that hates your guts, trust me I've been there and being pulled over everytime he saw my car wasn't cool.

You can be fined for not having a BICYCLE HELMET! When the fuck did that happen?!?! :banghead:

I'm not going to debate anyone as to the merits of wearing one. I'll concur with the fact its safer, but there's a fine for not wearing one now?

Passing laws based on 'what would be good for you' is a stupid fucking way to do things.

:swear:

LETS PASS THE A LAW MAKING IT ILLEGAL TO EAT MEAT because it might increase your chances of a heart attack!

LETS MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO WALK ANYWERE - it be much better for you to jog $400.00 at least.

There are a million others.

JUST BECAUSE ITS A GOOD IDEA DOESN'T MEAN IT SHOULD BE A FUCKING LAW!!!

i agree. the same goes with the seatbelt law. even if it weren't the law to buckle up, i would anyway, but i don't think it should be a punishable offense to not wear one.

Hmmm...I wear a bell and a helmet wherever I go. I don't own a bicycle, though. My mother says it's because I'm "special".

Here's a tip: Ride around with a dozen donuts from now on to bribe your way out of tickets. Or pedal harder than your delinquent buddy...

I agree about the helmets, but not about the seatbelts. Not wearing a seatbelt actually CAN injure other people - whether you're ejected into them, or they're just sitting in front of you...

nah, kids should always wear seatbelts, that's a little 60-70 lb kid. a grown passenger wouldn't fly up like that and i think they'd hit the car ceiling first anyway. the law here is anyone under 14 has to wear a seatbelt, even in the back seat. that law should stay. i mean front occupants. especially if you have front air bags. it's definitely a good idea to wear your seat belt, but it shouldn't be a law IMO.

i'm sorry but that video was kinda funny :icon16:

A grown man thrown with the force of a car going 60mph coliding head on with another car going 5mph would be enough to send him through someone snaping various parts on one persons body and snaping the neck off of the person they hit, and then sending them through a windshield -INTO- the other persons car killing them, or at least maiming them. Whereas otherwise they could be fine *I was in an accident like that where my car was obliterated, but the guy's blazer who hit me had bumper damage *it was wraped around my frame* but we all were fine. The seatbelts are a big thing. Just like not stoping at a red light....might be fine or you might run into someone smashing their side in and riping them apart.

I'm completly behind boingo on this one.
