Brake Job

Anybody got any info on doing a brake job (in my case, a rear brake job) on an LS (mine's a 2000). I've done brake jobs before, but I don't know what to expect on the LS. I've looked at the brakes as much as changing out a flat would allow, and previous jobs were on simpler cars, I'm sure.

Plus not being able to find a repair manual with detailed info kinda hurts, too.

If you've ever done rear discs, you'll find it very similar. The only special tool needed is a claiper winding tool. Due to the parking brake, the rear caliper pistons are threaded and can't be simply pressed back into their cyliders. You need the tool to turn them in. There is a universal tool that works OK once it's been slightly modified by filing the nubs down some. It makes sense when you've got it in your hands. The universal tool costs like $7.00, IIRC.

Can this tool you speak of, be bought from regular Autoparts?

Yes.

make sure you open your brake fluid resivoir cap before trying to wind them back in. You will find that it take a lot of twisting to get them back in. Count on a few hours for you first job due to the learning/frustration curve.

Have a few good curse words handy too... you will need them.

I just got my car back from the dealer. I paid $928.44 for the 60k mile maintenance. They said it was 11k miles overdue. I took my car for the SRS issue and I had to pospone it, and get this done instead. what a pain. Now I have to drive with that stupid beeping for another few months.

They quoted me $686 for the the bakes (includes 2 front rotor replacement, resurface the rear ones and put break pads on them. Do you guys think I can do this myself and save me some bucks.

I found a set of four Rotor on ebay for $195 (shiping included). I'm still looking for the Porterfield R4s pads. Can't find then anywhere.

I found the clockSpring for $88 but not the Light buld. Is probably a regular bulb..
If I could only put my hands on how to do this myself.

To fix the SRS system, all the have to do is to replace the Light bulb and the ClockSpring they said, and that runs for another $533.84.
