I have a Chevy 350 in a Jeep cj5. Pre-1987 engine.
Do you know where I can go on the internet to read about making sure I am at TDC.
The timing marks on the timing chain cover is gone and I have a feeling the balancer was not put on correctly to 0 zero degrees.
I was going to set the distributor rotor right on number 1 on the distributor cap but what if my timing is like 30 degrees or something. I have not idea what my timing is.
Is there away to take off the valve cover and on number one cly will both/one/none of the intake or exhaust valve be different ?
Thanks in advance.

The best way to find TDC if you are unsure of everything is to make a piston stop and screw it in where #1 plug goes then make some type of pointer to hang from the timing cover. Roll the engine over by hand easy, so not to score up piston when it hits the stop, and mark when it does meat stop. Then roll engine over the other way till it hits stop. The very middle between these two marks will be TDC. As far as timing should go, you should get about 20 to 24 degrees advance from the mechanical advance, initial timing should be set to 12 degrees if you have 24 in advance. When all timing advance is in you should be @ 34 to 36 degrees. This is all done without the vaccum advance hooked up. Vaccum advance should be hooked up to full vac not ported also.
