Spring Install?

I was thinking about doing the spring install myself, but I've read I need a spring compressor to remove the strut and spring assembly, any insight on to this? Is it dangerous to attempt to remove it without one?

No one would happen to have a tutorial on replacing the springs on a 94 Accord with pictures would they? Thanks!

You can use this http://www.deepstaged.net/spring_install.htm (which didnt work for me) or you can just use an impact wrench lay the spring on the floor and take off the top bolt letting the spring and the bottom of the strut assembly pop off...I did the impact wrench thing for my springs and when they popped off they only went about 2 feet away from me...it was pretty safe I guess

=/ I gotta say, that post didn't exactly inspire me with confidence... none-the-less, thanks for the link... I'm contemplating just taking it somewhere if they only charge me like $100-$150 for it. Otherwise, I'll probably just buy a spring compressor. If you have one, is it easier to remove that bolt than use an impact gun? I.e. I don't have an air compressor or an impact gun.

After doing a search on Spring Compressors on these forums, I think to prevent myself from being maimed, I'm going to call my mechanic on Monday and see what he'll quote me.

wassup. dont take it to a mechanic. you can do it yourself!!! it's sooo easy man. and dont buy a spring compressor. just rent one from autozone. u rent it for free but u have to leave a dopsit of 40 bucks. u get the money back when u bring back the compressor. and theres no limit as to how long u can rent it for. i returned mine 3 weeks after i had rented it.

search online to find out how to go about take n the struts off and install n new springs. theres alot of information out there. use google to search for it or any other search engines.

im not sure how the setup for the rear struts are in the accord, but for my integra, removing the rear struts was a bitch. i couldnt get the bolt off the rear strut where it connects to the lower control arm. The bolt was frozen or rusted inside the bushing of the lower control arm. i broke two wratchets try n to get that bolt off and i also snapped the head off the bolt!!! i had to take it to my friends shop to get the struts out. they had to cut the bolts off with a saw zaw and then remove the bushings from the lower control arm and press in a new bushing. it was a bitch to do.
oh yea i remebr one of my friends had the same problem with his 95 accord. he snapped the bolt too! it's a common problem in honda cars!

well hope that helps ya. good luck

Its not that hard...dont call your mechanic...this is something im sure you can do by yourself...If you can rent the spring compressor from autozone do that and it'll be easier to take off the bolt at the top because there'll be no pressure on it...but if you cant rent the compressor just buy a electric impact wrench or find a friend who has one and just lay the spring assembly down on the ground on a surface with alot of friction (sand, grass etc) and just undo the top bolt...its realy easy to do...your mechanic is not necessary...

Fuck... I don't have any friends who could remove a seized bolt, doesn't that require cutting if the head is broken off?

I tried to do my exhaust myself and couldn't do it, I must be too fucking weak or some shit because I couldn't ever get the bolts off. And I definitely don't want to end up stripping them. We'll see, I'll talk to my friend. He just ordered new springs for his Civic and maybe I'll wait till he gets those on so I can be sure he's capable.

Thanks for the info though!

Okay I was talking to a different friend of mine and thinking about the nut or bolt getting seized on there... I read somewhere else on here, I believe by either Jackasssi or SilverY2KCivic that if I soak them in penatrating oil for like 24 hours I will be able to get them off. Any clue into this? how would I soak the nut or bolt if it's still in the strut assembly?

if the bolt is seized inside the bushing due to rust, there's really nothing you can do to unseize the bolt from the bushing. u can try to use penetrating fluid and soak it for 24 hours but i doubt that will work. when the bolt is siezed inside the bushing it's usually gonna stay n there and not move.
Maybe you'll have luck on ur side and ur bolts wont be siezed inside the bushing. just try to remove the bolts with a breaker bar. if the bolts dont seem to move at all then ur pretty much screwed cuz it's siezed in the bushing.

it wont hurt to try the penetraiting oil for 24 hours. make sure u soak the bolt and spray inside by the bushing alot. soak em pretty good then try to take the bolt off the next day

good luck

Thanks for the tips. Fortunately the front ones weren't and I'm going to try to install the rear springs tommarow.

Does anyone have any tips on removing the trunk plastics / carbet on a 1994 Accord? I'll admit I haven't really tried but I was hoping someone had suggestions for making it easier.

I was in the home stretch, last strut to do and it appears the nut on the top is siezed. Fuck. I called the local dealership to see if they had a replacement strut w/ upper mount and they said it'd have to be ordered and would cost $220. So, I'm pretty much shit out of luck. Guess I'll be riding the bike everywhere.

Success! I was in autozone shopping for a hack saw and nut splitters when my friend called me and I told him the problem. He met me at my place with a set of vise grips and viola, we pried that nut off.

All the new springs are on and the car looks great. It's a little lower than I had expected, 2 finger widths at the top of the tire (front & rear). There's about a popcan's height + an inch between the bottom of the car and the ground, so pretty low, but it's still higher than stock S2000's =P

I'm going to let the springs settle a bit than take it in for an alignment. I'll have pics up probably sometime tommarow evening.
