gas pedal sticks

I have a 98 blazer and when first pushing the gas pedal from a stop it has a catch in it and takes some force to get push it in. After getting the pedal past the point where it catches it works fine but have to really put pressure on it to start moving and it will spin the tires when on gravel. I would appreciate advice on how and where to lube the throttle so it doesn't stick anymore. Thank you for you help....

I had the same problem, for me it was the butterfly valve in the throttle body was all gummed up, take off the air intake and look inside the throttle body for a black greasy buildup, push down on the valve to look inside or pull the throttle cable, if thats the case just buy some throttle body cleaner or carb and choke cleaner and follow the directions on the can and that should clean it up in there.

Also, lube your throttle cable and linkages.

Would the same fix work for a 2000 Blazer with the CSFI system?

Thanks

I had the same problem on my 98. I did the throttle body cleaner thing on mine and the varnish that was gummed up just cleaned right off and now no more sticking! Thanks

Yep, it seems to be a pretty normal thing on all of the GM throttle bodies from what I hear. It gets that varnish buildup in there and the tolerances are so tight that it sticks.

So is it better to do this with the engine on or off? I did it without the engine running and it was kind of boggy to stat, but once it did it ran fine.

I don't think you can do it with the engine running since you have to have the air intake removed from the throttle body. Won't that mess up the computer and give it false readings?

I don't think ti will mess up any readings, the computer might just sense it being able to suck more air in for a short period of time. I am sure the engine will stall though from being flooded with Throttle Body Cleaner.

The engine will definitely stall. The first time I tried this, I just took the air filter off and sprayed the TB cleaner through the MAF. When the engine started to stall, I just revved it up. However, it didn't clean the TB that well, so I removed the intake from the TB and the engine quickly died. After cleaning the TB, I replaced the intake and restarted the engine. Like you said, it was boggy at first but still started and ran fine.

It's pretty common. I had this problem a while back, STP TB cleaner did the trick. And, yeah they do run rough when you start them up.

Here's a question.....

I had the gas pedal problem but it was stuck open. Looked at the air intake. There is a valve with 2 rivets on it. The rivets should hold an aluminum wedge-shaped peice to the underside of the valve. In my case the buildup was pretty bad so the rivets broke and the wedge became almost completely disconnected, blocking the valve and holding it open.

So onto my question. This isn't a part available in a parts store. Tried the dealer and the whole throttle body is $340, can't just get that part. I could try to find a used one in a junkyard, or possibly repair the old one with some washers and rivets. But what I'm really wondering is if the wedge shaped peice is even necessary? I took it out and the Blazer seems to run OK, will it affect my gas mileage or have other side effects?

I've got a 2001 Blazer if that makes any difference.

Thanks,
-Andy
