does anyone know where i can purchase a set of paddle shifters? im pretty sure that they are not street legal, but im seriously searching for a set!

I can't imagine why they wouldn't be legal, some new cars have them.
A friend of mine got a quote 2 years ago for getting paddle shifters WITH a 6-speed gear box for an MR2.
If memory recalls, the quote was around $9,800.
So how serious are you?

ikeya (sp) in japan makes a conversion for an H-pattern gearbox to a sequential pattern. with that in mind, solenoids could be used to operate the lever back and forth for upshifting and downshifting with paddles/buttons on the steering wheel to operate the solenoids. you would still have to rev-match though, unless you developed software to do it for you.
back in 1989 and 1990, ferrari used a john barnard designed semi-automatic paddle shift system on a standard H-pattern dog box, so it can be done, but like jek said, at a pretty big expense. the ikeya formula shifter costs between $1200 and 1500, and that's only half the conversion. an actual sequential gearbox (which i would rather have) will run you from ~$8k to 15k.
if the novelty of it is all you're looking for, have an automatic swapped in and use buttons on the steering wheel to trigger the grounds for the shift solenoids in the tranny.

If it were to be used for racing would'nt a manual be more reliable, a full dog box, even clutch-less manuals in the WRC cars ;)

The new MR2 has a sequential manual 6 speed now as an option. If you are serious into getting the best track times out of your car though, then you shouldnt get one. They shave 0.8 seconds off a 0-60 time.
