FUEL INDICATOR going up/down

Just bought a 320i -E36 -91 My fuel indicator shows in one instant half full (when its half-full) but suddenly it goes down to zero. What could it be ?

'sounds like it could be the fuel sensor. It's part of the fuel pump (under rear seat).
