Radio gone crazy

Hi everyone, I have a 96 Bonneville 3.8. My radio has been acting very strange. The volume suddenly turns all the way up and we have to manually turn it down, and all over again. It's gradually getting worse. (Sporadic)
While this problem is happening, the steering wheel controls don't work properly either. We tried another radio and the problem continues so we know it's not the radio but something electrical. I personally assume it's somewhere in the steering wheel radio controls, but not sure.
Any help and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I also have a 1996 Bonneville, mine is a SSE. I'm kinda having similiar problems with my radio. But with mine you CAN use the steering wheel controls, but CANT use the manual ones. I dont have a clue whats wrong. If you find anything out, let me know thanks.

h We took the volume module out of the steering wheel. (It unplugs but tricky to reconnect) The radio works fine with this disconnected. However, no steering wheel control for volume. Dealership quoted us 140.00 for a new one and the junk yards we've gone to will only sell us the entire steering wheel assembly with the steering wheel radios controls for around 100.00. So, unless we can find them another way, we'll be using the volume on the radio for now on. Hope this helps you Rich.

If you get a chance to pull out the steering wheel controls, look at the switches. I had three burn up and did the same thing (94 SSEi). I found a resourse for the replacement switches and can order as many as you need, unfortunately they will not tell me from who. By watching over the counter (and reading upside down) the catalog was a supply shop in California. 2 Bucks a piece, pricey but correct replacements. Mine work like a charm, but you have to be able to use a soldering iron. Cost me 6 bucks...........worth it!
