What is the different between a turbo and non-turbo engine besides the turbo and all the vacum lines? I want to buy an engine and rebuild it. Could I buy a non turbo or do I have to buy a turbo engine.

Depends what year and model.
All vr4s are twin turbo 3.0 liter DOHC 24 valve v6 engines
SLs are the same except the turbos
base 3000gt is the same as the SL 91-96
97-99 they switched to a 3.0L SOHC 12 valve v6
However depending on what year, the cars did get some different internals, as the years advanced they were improved upon a bit to handle more power...obviously more things are needed to support the turbo setup, however you could rebuild any, providing you have the knowledge to do so...so what specifically is your question?

SLs are the same except the turbosUm, well..... not really.
The blocks are similar but their are oiling dfferances. the intake plenum is different. The pistons are different. Compression is 10:1 not 8:1.
And I know I'm missing many.

Correction it's the 3L sohc 24 v6. it's just the cam diffrence not valve.

No he's right is only 12.
The motor was used in some other cars where the sohc had 24 valves. But, the 3S version is 12.

Alan, you're right, I should have taken that into account and not given such a huge generalization.

Well that's something new i learned, i always thought all the engines had 24 valves.

I wanted to buy a non-turbo engine since they seem to be easy and cheaper to find in my area and rebuild it to drop in my vr4.

here's the main difference, twin turbo engines love to spin bearings where as non-turbos dont :disappoin
