91 4 Runner Starter Problems

Hey all,
My 1991 V6 2WD Automatic 4 Runner has been experiencing problems starting - mainly in hot weather. The starter seems to seize up, and after a jump, it's good for another month or so.
I've been told it's a prblem with the starter (duh), but have heard several remidies for my solution. Waddya think, should I:
a. Fork out the $300-$400 and just have the starter replaced.
b. Buy a new or used starter, and replace it myself.
b. Install a heat shield which aparently keeps a part of the starter from expanding when the engine gets hot.
c. Replace the contacts on the starter.
Any help, advice or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. If you think I can do this myself, I'd appreciate any information on how to do so (I'm not a mechanical retard, but I know replacing anything electrical can be dangerous).
Thanks!
B

Replace the starter yourself with a good quality rebuilt one. As long as you have the tools, go for it. Torque the bolts and electrical connection.
Replacing the contacts probably won't do the job for you.
Don't go with a used starter.
