Electrical problem

I just bought a 1984 Camaro HO Z28. It is in mint condition! It has a total of 18,000 miles and still smells new when you sit in it. However, it does have an electrical problem that is driving me nuts. After charging the battery I can start the car and the voltage indicator is above 13. After aprox. an hour of driving the car it will slowly go down to 8-6 volts. The check engine light comes on, and the tachometer starts to gain a mind of its own. The choke light goes on and off whenever it wants to but usually after I depress on the gas. After starting the car, if I use the lights or the A/C it takes alot less time for the indicator to go down to nothing. It immediatly goes down to around 10 volts and continues to drop. If anyone has any suggestions as to where to start I would appreciate your input. Thanks

check the connections to your alternator make sure they arnt loose or broken. you can charge your battery and drive your car to autozone they do free alternator checks they will tell you how much juice its putting out if any...

yea sounds like a prob with you alternator, if you need a new alt. i would recomend a higher amp alt if your planning on puttin a stereo system in later on

alt/reg or could even be the battery itself. if it's got a bad cell sometimes they'll work fine one minute and try to go flat the next

Oh! I forgot to explain that I had a problem right to start with so I bought a new battery and that seemed to help for a little while. However after a week or so the battery indicator started to go down. I then went to an auto parts store and bought an alternator that was identical with the one that was in it. After a couple of weeks I realized that replacing the alternator hadn't resolved the problem. I called the chevy dealer here in town and gave them the K codes that tells me what size of alternator the car originally came with. It was a 95amp atlternator. The aternator that was in the car was a 55amp alt. I immediatley went down to the auto parts store and they were kind enough to swap me with the higher amp alt and I paid the difference. It still does the same thing! Should I start looking for a frayed wire somewhere. I actually went as far as testing the amperage at each circuit at the fuse panel and did'nt find anything out of the ordinary. I also pulled off the positive wire to the battery and tested the current when everything was turned off including the hood light. I measured 25-30 milli amps. Help!

check the resistance of your positive battery cable, if acid got into it, and corroded it, then its not going to allow the battery to charge, and might burn up your regulator. resistance should be VERY low, like 1 ohm or something.
