Metal foil

i was at the local hobby store, browsing(unforanatly my mom was waitng so i couldnt spend to much time...i sawear i could browse all day!) but i saw metal foil. but it had a few creases. i was interested in it. how do i apply it and is it strong. can it only be put on flat areas or could i use it on rims or valve covers? i really want to chrome some things on my new projct 69 charger. would it be better to buy alcalad II? i am just curious

I'm assuming it was Bare Metal Foil(BMF). BMF is nice stuff, its perfect for trim but your best off using Alclad II for rims,valve covers etc.

I don't know where to get Alclad II seeing as I don't use it(don't have an airbrush) but here is how to put BMF

Things you need:
BMF
Cotton Swab
Sharpened(or new) Exacto knife

1. Get the basic shape of what you want to foil. Get some BMF off the sheet and put it on.
2. Use the cotton swab to rub it down until all the detail under is showing.
3.With your Exacto lightly press down and cut around the thing your foiling(I only use it for the trim).

BMF is not strong, it is a very fine film and will tear quite easily if you're not careful. The creases are splits in the surface and the BMF will separate along them. If you can, inspect each sheet and pick one that has least creases.

Application is as Tommy illustrated. I'd add that the knife should be very sharp, ideally a brand new blade. When cutting use very light pressure otherwise it could gather and tear. Usually the weight of the knife itself is sufficient.

Both BMF and metalizers like Alclad have their place. Every modeller should keep each of them in his toolkit!

Bare metal foil is a musf for lights. it will give you a really good shine. it's very fragile, you need to work slowly and carefully
