A lot of issues

I have a 1998 Isuzu Rodeo V6 with all these things wrong. What am I looking at for repairs? First of all:ABS light is on-that is covered by the warranty I think.

Second: There is a weird sound coming from my front driver side tire. Almost like a clicking sound. Like when you used to put a playing card in your bike spokes. Does this in forward and reverse.

Third: The check engine light is blinking. It was just on and now blinks. The check engine light came on this time alond with #5 problem.

Fourth: The car sucks the oil down.

Fifth: The car is acting like is it going to die and never does. When I hit the gas it sounds very loud. The check engine light coincided with this action. It did this one other time and I got an oil change and it stopped. My husband said I had bad gas. Don't think so though!

Any help would be great-it has 135,000 miles on it-never had not started or stranded me anywhere. Knock on wood! :banghead:

Seeing that you have high mileage it sounds like you need some general maintance done.

If your truck is a 4x4 the clicking sound is most likely due to a bad cv joint.

ABS, check your fuse, and call your dealer to due a vin check to see if your truck is covered under warrenty.

A Flashing CEL is a bad thing. Purchase a code reader and find out what codes you have (most likely due to plugged EGR and busted intake manafold gasket).

Oil, Common, due to plug EGR, EGR Port, highway driving, plugs PCV (replace yearly), and plugged holes in your piston rings. See my FAQ link below for a ton of DIY info on how to help curb your trucks thirst for oil.

Acting like it is going to die, commonly is due to a leaky intake manafold gasket.

Finally, again, check out my FAQ and do ALL of the 30k maintance things listed there, including new plugs, and a timing belt.

Is this going to cost some money and time? Yup, do it now and you'll get another 135k out of the truck. A little maintance can go along way.

Another thing I notice is that the CEL blinks while driving. It stops blinking and is just on when I am parked while running, idle at a stop light etc. While stopped and running the light doesn't blink. Wonder why that is?

If you have an autozone near you they will read the codes for free. If not you can pick up a code reader for under 100 bucks. A dealer will charge you 50-80 for just reading the codes.

My guess it that your EGR is plugged.

If you have a Harbor Freight Tool store nearby, they offer a code reader for $40. Don't know about the quality of it since I haven't bought one but it's still cheaper than a visit to the dealer.

Everyone who has a 1996 or newer Rodeo with the OBD II system is lucky. Although I can read my codes by shorting the ALDL connector, I can't get the engine running parameters like:

Engine RPM, Engine coolant / air temperature, Oxygen sensor voltage, ST / LT Fuel trim, Closed/open loop, Air fuel ratio, Throttle angle, System voltage, EGR status, Manifold absolute pressure, ETC.

I've looked for a scan tool that will work with my Rodeo and cannot find one anywhere.

can you leave the scanner hooked up while driving, to use it like a set of gauges???????/ a friend of mine use to have something like that for his nissan 240 think the name was telcom (or something) but it told you everything the car was doing you could mount it on the dash it was pricey at 400 bucks but it saved him from buying like 5 different autometer gauges

on the 97 rodeo it is under the hood release lever. Not sure on other years.

I think you can, at least the manual says you can test drive the car while the scan tool is hooked up. I don't know if it is a good idea to keep it connected permanently.

I'm not sure, but I would think that the front CV axles do not rotate when the truck isn't in 4WD. If thats the case, a bad CV joint would only make noise while in 4WD. Correct me if I'm wrong. :icon16:

Yep. On the 1998-2004 4x4's the front CV joints spin all the time in stock form (solid drive flanges). FWIU- aftermarket lockout hub kits are do-able on 1998-2001 to keep the front axles from spinning in 4x2. No kits are avail. for 2002-2004's due to the "new" front hub design.

A cylinder misfire is the only thing that will cause the cel to constantly flash while driving

change the spark plugs

I am willing to bet this vehicle has the 2.2 I-4 if so
replace the valve cover gasket thats where you are losing oil its all down in the plug tubes and down the back side of the cylinder head

as for the clicking noise checck your hood hinges

on the 98 your abs concern will most likely not be covered there have been a few issues with wires breaking at one of the connectors for the rear abs sensor
