Fan dont work in high position

I recently bought a 1998 Olds 88LS. The blower fan does not work in the high position, all others work fine. The control is the standard style not the dual climate or auto climate control. I have not worked on these in about 15 years so I am not sure what I am getting into in this car. I am hoping its just a bad connection or switch I can clean. I will be swapping the radio next week so that should be the perfect time to check it out.
I am also looking for some interior panels if anyone knows a good place to check on the net or otherwise
THanks

I'm not real familiar with your car but if I were you I would buy a Hanes repair manual for it.
find where the plug in is for the blower motor.
their should be a couple wires.
use a ohm meter to find ground. then hook a fused hot wire to the other plugs one at a time the blower should blow at different speeds depending on which wire you hook to.
the Hanes manual may even tell you which one is for high medium and low.

I have a 95 LSS and blew a fan motor relay switch which prevented the fan motor from blowing, it did not blow on the low positions either, but your problem could be the same. You'll never find it unless someone tells you, but on my 95 it's located in the engine compartment on the firewall about the middle of the car in the AC duct work. If you look there you'll see electrical wires connecting to this relay. There are also some other fan relays under the dash on the passenger's side that might be the problem.

If the system is the same as a 95 the service manual states to first check the high blow fuse at
the underhood fuse block and if good then check the high speed blower relay also located under the hood located near he blower motor.

And I'am not totally sure but alot of GM's used resistors to control the fan speed and these are located right next to the fan (( for cooling reasons )) and some times they have been knowen to fail ... ((( they have four heavy gauge wires going to them ))) and you can usally pull them out with two screws and there's three coiled wire wound resistors and see if any are burnt out ....
And like I say this might not apply to this car but it does for alot of older GM products ......
Oh and the Hanes Maual doesn't help alot with the wireing or relays .... maybe go ask a dealer if you can take a quick peek at there service manual, most will let you if you have clean hands and buy there parts at some point in time .....

Hi i had a similar problem on my wife's buick, in the high position, the fan didnt work. I checked the relay, and i cleaned it, and bended the element inside it a little so it would make more contact. Before you start doing anything to it, look at it carefully in the low position and then look at it in the high position so you can see the element moving in side the relay.Hope this works for you. if not change the relay. good luck jack.

So far I have not been able to track the relay. The wiring from the blower motor leads into the firewall. I only have 4 relays under the hood in the mega fuse center. Looks like I will have to take a trip to the dealer.

Just as a thought, have someone turn the switch on &off and see which relay works and then you'll know which one it is and if no relay reacts you have a wiring problem, but if it does you'll know its either a fuse or the relay itself. good luck

On high the blower gets its juice direct and the other speeds go through a resistor, it could be the switch that is in the dash that is bad . . . or a bad connection in a wire further back from the switch . . .
