I think that you should keep the modifications to a minimum. That is a lot of miles, so If you do any mods, you might want to keep them things that can be easily taken off and put on a more fresh VW, like rims. as for a system, I would just set up a simple system that you could take out when you sell the car, like a nice thumping box with the amp on it so that you can just unplug it... With those kind of miles serious mods like body kits, and a cam and exhaust will go to waste... well maybe clamp on a nice muffler, but if you want to resell it, you should put the stock muffler back on, so keep that in mind...
Just my thoughts...

Bro, I'm assuming youre in high school and it being your first car maybe dont know too much about VW's; or cars in general. I was there once too so its all good. Im into hondas now, but I used to have a jetta sophomore year in college. I figured i'd check out the VW forum for shits n giggles. I had an 89 GL with 70k when I bought it ($500). Had it for 2 years and did wheels --205/16/40, headers/straight pipe/1.8 inch drop. Every mod I did made my jetti so much better than stock. It was loud as fuck, and not ricey like most imports with just a fart pipe (big chrome muffler with stock exhaust) and took corners real nice. It wasnt fast, but it kept me happy for the time i had it. Sold it with mods at about 103k for $1900. My point---108k miles on a vdubb is not that high. My advice to you is definitely do some mods.--
Think about it...even if your jetta only lasts 3 years (which it wont unless you put hella miles on it).. youre going to want something new probably within a few years. I've seen jettas at the junkyard with 250k miles, no joke. Do some mods, but try to get one thing straight--pleasing yourself is more important than pleasing your friends. ie.. Fuck what they do to their rides --do what YOU want to it. Good luck.

Right on... that 12" should be good for pissing off neighbors you dont like late @ nite. I had beats in most of my rides in HS cause my best bro always had extra boxes/amps he let me borrow..never spent a dime on sounds. After a while though my ears started to hurt from the boom so I pulled out the box and kept it strictly 6 x 9 Rock Fos with no amp. Plus I knew alot of kids that had their shit stolen cause they rode around advertising what was in the trunk. Yeah 17's would be dope on your jetti; especially charcoal but you have to be careful of rubbing/etc. You wont have much room to drop it either with 17's. With 16's you could slam the shit out of it with no probs at all. and they are lighter.
