Alright I'm a VW fan so I know a bit about them but I have no idea what the "R" stands for in VR6. I've checked around the web and read through Performance VW (PVW) and the closest answer was on Volkswagen's website "VR is short for vroom" but I don't think thats really it.
Cheers and thanks.

I thought the R was in reference to the angle of the engine placement. It's not a V6 when it has a 15degree angle on it.... But what the hell do I know.

wow, are you guys serious?
V - stands for V, like a V-8
R - stands for "reihen" for inline in german
6 - stands for 6 cylinders
therefore a v/inline 6 cylinder motor.

That sounds convining enough, but how can an engine be an inline six when it's transversly mounted? Just a thought.

why would it matter which orientation the motor is in? fiat and miata motors are mounted longitudinally(sp) but they are 4 cylinders. the VR is not called an inline 6, since its not, and its not called a V6, cause its not. here is what the block looks like..

If you think the block looks weird, you should see the head, especiallly in cross section. What a casting!

What you can't see there are the weirdly long intake and exhaust ports (depending on the side). Those wacky Germans!
