I'm seriously considering buying a 1994 maxima GXE wit 56k miles. I love my 4th GEN 88 civic sedan, but i have to part with her for something bigger. Currently I am down to two choices. A 93 accord 10th anniv. with a 125hp 2.2 liter 4 wit 80k miles for $3k. OR a 94 maxima GXE wit 160hp 3liter 6 for $2k. Both cars are being sold from family members.
Anyways, i had a ?.
what is difference tween the motors of a GXE and SE. Why does SE have more HP?????

the SE is the dohc vg30 making 190 hp and 190 tq(maybe 176 tq) the gxe is a sohc vg making 160 hp and 176 tq. the accord is definitely a step down from the max regardless of the model.

all 89-91 maxima's and 92-94 GXE's have the VG30E single overhead cam motor with about 160hp and 190 ft/lbs. All 92-94 SE's have the VE30DE motor with 190 hp and 190 ft/lbs and have the dual overhead cam motor. It is not worthwhile to swap the single overhead cam motor to the dual overhead cam motor. You would have to change all of the wiring harnesses, transmission and axles preferably (there is a difference), and I'm not sure what else. The VG is a very reliable motor and you can do some mods to make it pretty fast. I have a VE DOHC and it is reliable, but it is known for having some issues with the variable timing. The VG is at least as reliable as any honda motor.
