auto to manual swap...

ok... 1991 240sx coupe.... automatic... swapping out tranny with 5 speed from a 1991 240sx hatchback. being that both cars have the same powerplant, the tranny swap will work, but how mechanically sound will it be? there wouldnt be problems with leaks, etc. if its done right? and what IS the hardest part about doing this swap? ive heard many things... from slave cylinder to drilling a whole for the clutch pedal... any ideas or help would be appreciated

just a lot of work getting then tranny out and replacing it, drilling holes for the clutch, installing clutch, slave and master cylinder,etc.....it is just a lot of work and if you can live without driving it for weeks or even months go ahead but i heard it was hell to do the job.

Expensive too...can be over 1500 if you bring it somewhere. Do it yourself or if you get it done when you do a swap then it's a lot cheap...still probably around 1000 unless you can find a cheap donor car with the tranny parts in alright shape.
If you do the swap then I reccomend you get some upgraded parts if you ever plan on upgrading the car...it's easier this way. Probably the clutch and flywheel are the major parts I would upgrade.

major misinformation here.
Swapping the trans is a little more than a clutch and flywheel job. Should take two about a weekend to do. You have to drill and holesaw/punch out a total of three holes....this is labelled as the hardest part of the whole job by some.
Cost can be as low as $200 to at the really high end $1500 with aftermarkter flywheel, clutch, shifter, and some misc....
It's probably not the job to do though if you must have your car at all costs.

Well I live like a block away from my work and my best friend is a mechanic so he said he's help me do all the labor for free. Is it a good idea then? Because the 240sx hatchback is my favorite car and nearly impossible to find in my area. If the car was manual it'd be perfect but given about a month or 2 i could have about 2000 to put in to it. Considering i won't NEED the car for a weekend or even a whole week if necessary would it be worth it?

It really depends. Would $1500 be a lot if you snagged a 20,000 mile automatic vehicle at a steal....probably not, but if you are going to do the swap in a 240SX that would sell $3k or less then it may be excessive.
You just have to make sure you have all parts accounted for and what the labor entails.

Well I got the car plus 1000 for my old car. The guy is my friend and he just bought a tiburon and needed a reliable car for his g/f. The 240 is not in reliable condition...yet. So I have a friend that'll do all the labor for free and he's fixing everything in the car for 600. so i have 400 left over and have intentions of keeping this car for most of my life.
